I hope he wasn't killing them, they are vital to the health of the oceans.

I know why people think their fins are desirable, but the miniscule amount of energy they provide a body is nothing compared to their function...they are an important part in keeping the ocean's healthy, even crucial in some ways. Dead things tend to float on the surface of the water, at least for a time.

There are other creatures, sand-worms, crabs, filter feeders, etc that rid the bottom of the oceans of decay, keeping the waters clean. If we lose those, the oceans would be unfit for most life. We rely on the ocean for some of our food, will need it more in the future for sure, so if the oceans go, most of us go too.

Things like nuclear waste being dumped into the oceans is bad, because it kills anything it touches. The vast network of pipes in the Gulf of Mexico leaks constantly, and dead-zones are common there. Shrimp and crab fisherman over-harvest on occasion, and they have to suffer through periods of time and wait until those stocks rebound to sustain them again.

But sharks are the top-feeders, for the most part. If we don't have enough sharks around, those decaying bodies floating on the surface make it to shore and spread diseases. Sharks (and bottom-feeders) have a type of immunity to those diseases and devour the bodies before that can happen. We really shouldn't be killing them.

Turtles are not something I personally would ever eat, but in a case like this, you do what you have to in order to survive. I know that Les Stroud, of the Survivorman TV series, ate one in the South...and spent the next year in extreme agony as the lining of his mouth, throat, etc, began to seperate from the connective tissue holding it in place. He thought he cooked it correctly. He didn't.

Plus, I have a fondness for turtles, for this reason and that, so I myself am not looking at them as food lol
