Americans should prepare for coronavirus spread in U.S., CDC says

Top U.S. public health officials said Tuesday that Americans should prepare for the spread of the coronavirus in communities across the country.

“It’s not so much a question of if this will happen any more, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the head of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said during a media briefing Tuesday.

Measures to contain the virus in the U.S. so far have involved restricting travel to and from China — the center of the outbreak — and isolating cases identified so far in this country.

But Messonnier said that evidence that the virus is spreading in other countries, such as Iran and Italy, has raised CDC’s “level of concern and expectation that we’ll see spread” in the U.S.

This is already having profound effects on the Stock Market, travel, the economy, not to mention people's lives all over the world and it is coming here eventually. But I guess lack of interest is the right approach. What does the CDC know anyway?

 

And the President has an obligation not to start a panic that will make the situation worse. Staying calm makes a lot more sense than a bunch of handwringing. A couple of billion dollars is to be appropriated to deal with the problem. That is the right approach.

This administration should be called out for the incompetence and outright stupidity it displayed in taking an ax to the established systems and governmental infrastructure that were built up to deal with a situation like the emergence of the corona virus. The country may pay a high price for that. I hope that it doesn't. Regardless of the outcome, the incompetence and outright stupidity remain, and should not be ignored. Nor should the blatant lies told by Trump in regard to this issue be accepted--that sort of behavior does nothing to improve the situation, and could very well cause harm to the country.

Since you've given yourself permission to claim that I have posted something "sick" I will return the favour: What that post displays is projection of a ruthless win at any cost partisanship onto others.

I've already noted the fact that you seem unable to conceive of a person who opposes Trump, yet is not a Democrat. What you're doing here is creating a false "us vs. them" narrative for yourself. Trump is good therefore anybody who opposes him or points out his blatant incompetence is bad. Bad people are ruthless and ethically bankrupt, therefore everybody who opposes Trump is ruthless and ethically bankrupt.

After coming under fire for painting an overly rosy picture of the coronavirus threat, President Donald Trump hewed closely to the facts Wednesday in a news conference at the White House.

Flanked by government officials, he accurately told the nation that the risk to Americans remains low, that the country should prepare out of an abundance of caution and that a vaccine was in the works.


Here's what the president said and what the facts are.

Claim: The risk to Americans is low
"The risk to the American people remains very low," Trump said during the news conference.

Later, pressed on whether he agreed with health officials' view that coronavirus will inevitably spread in the U.S., he said: "I don't think it's inevitable. It probably will. It possibly will. It could be at a very small level, or it could be at a larger level. Whatever happens, we're totally prepared."

This broadly tracks with what top public health officials have said, although some have warned about the impending spread in stronger terms.

Later, he added: "But that's a little bit like the flu. It's a little like the regular flu that we have flu shots for. And we'll essentially have a flu shot for this in a fairly quick manner."

This is a bit exaggerated. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in the same news conference that a potential vaccine is in rapid development but that a final product is at least a year to 18 months away — if trials that are happening now succeed. This is fast for a vaccine, but it's not going to help anyone imminently.

There are actually 60 in total, but the CDC categorizes them in two groups. Fifteen were diagnosed in the U.S. — Trump said he calls them "the original 15" — and 45 cases involve people who were repatriated with the virus from abroad.

Claim: The flu kills more people
"I want you to understand something that shocked me when I saw it, that I spoke with Dr. Fauci on this, and I was really amazed, and I think most people were amazed to hear it. The flu in our country kills from 25,000 people to 69,000 people a year. That was shocking to me," Trump said before comparing it to those sickened by the coronavirus. "And so far, if you look at what we have with the 15 people, and they're recovering, one is pretty sick but hopefully will recover. But the others are in great shape."

 

The CDC isn't wrong, I just don't care about Corona virus.

 

Unfortunately, it's something we have to care about. It poses a health risk for many people, and although I think that the financial markets have overreacted, it’s having it’s effect on the economy as well.

The sad part is that some Democrats, including the individuals on this site, see other people’s misery as an opportunity for them to benefit politically. Instead to trying to pull the country together to help everyone get through this, they seek to divide. It’s going to hurt them in the national election.

Primarily the concern is that the CDC is saying one thing and Trump is saying something entirely different. Trump certainly isn't the brightest bulb and the things he says are heard by a lot of people with a cult-like devotion to every single word he utters or tweets. If Trump is saying things that are contrary to the advice of the experts, he is doing more harm than good.

People like @JohnHamilton hang on his every word and only believe what he tells them in spite of his obvious level of ignorance and incompetence. These people are a danger both to themselves and the rest of us. God protect the rest of us from the willfully ignorant cultists.
