The hypocrisy of this clown knows no bounds: Joe Biden Slammed for Calling Trump’s Travel Restrictions Racist, Xenophobic, Then Enacting His Own Nov. 27, 2021 President Joe Biden on Friday was slammed for enacting travel restrictions on eight countries due to a fresh coronavirus variant after calling former President Trump’s coronavirus travel restrictions in 2020 racist and xenophobic. Trump issued travel restrictions on countries around the globe after the Chinese Coronavirus pandemic landed in the United States in 2020. Biden was quick to label those protectionist measures racist and xenophobic, like this tweet from February 1, 2020, following a travel-ban announcement: On Friday, the world was awakened to a rapidly spreading coronavirus variant originating from African nations. https://yournews.com/2021/11/27/225...trumps-travel-restrictions-racist-xenophobic/
I had the very same thought when I heard the news. I don’t know how these people can face themselves in the mirror. Their hypocrisy is so thick it is palpable.
I saw that too; more of the same. As I've said and will continue to repeat: the leftists embrace the hypocrisy. It doesn't bother them at all and they will continue it until enough people wake up and push back.
I do think it's a purely political move that, just as I argued when Trump did it, is utterly useless for stopping/slowing the entry. So yes, still xenophobic and wrong in that it punishes South Africa for their vigilance in indentify the variant. What we actually need is strict entry 2 week quarantines regardless of country of departure. However we don't have the infrastructure to create and enforce this, and we should have been doing it the whole time. So, now we are left with hypocrisy on the other side to confront. Are travel bans like this still a smart move as the right applauded Trump for as a key measure for controlling the virus? Surely if you thought Trump made the right choice then Biden must be correct here too.
I'm fine with temporary travel bans. It's actually one of the (very) few things I can't get mad at Biden for. I also don't think travel bans are xenophobic, especially if there is reason to believe that there is danger from those coming from that country. It's just amusing to point out the hypocrisy. But hey if Biden wants to bring back other Trump policies that worked, then let's go hypocrisy!
Accidental contradiction . . . intentional hypocrisy. Yes, Biden's right now, and was wrong in 2020. Trump is right now, and was right in 2020 too. I'll take 100% over 50% every day of the week.
How is it "right" when in both instances it's been a largely useless measure that's done for political points? As I measure it, the score is 50% and 0%, both failing grades.
I don't believe it's a "largely useless measure" at all. Travel restrictions from countries where COVID is prevalent are barriers to spreading the disease. Trump was right and Biden is right. I'm glad that Biden finally realized that Trump was correct (in much the same way that he realized that Trump was correct with the "Remain in Mexico" policy). It doesn't erase the fact that Biden is a hypocrite, however (and, according to his own words, a "xenophobe").
And how effective have those barriers been? Perhaps we could use a metric like total infections or deaths. Did it do a thing long term when Trump shut down travel in specific countries? No, of course it didn't. It was already spread to plenty of other countries there wasn't travel ban on. Will it help anything this time? Also no, the variant will be all over the U.S. by early 2022. If they want to shut down the border entirely or enact strict quarantines on international traffic, now we're talking, but these small scale measures are for absolutely nothing but appearances.
Not really. I'll take a travel ban that is "effective in preventing COVID-19 case importation in early outbreak phase" over NO TRAVEL RESTRICTION: "Travel restriction was effective in preventing COVID-19 case importation in early outbreak phase, but may still be limited in preventing general local transmission. The impact of travel restrictions, regardless of promptness, in containing epidemics likely also depends on the effectiveness of local surveillance and non-pharmaceutical interventions concurrently implemented." https://bmcinfectdis.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12879-021-06449-1 But, then this thread really isn't about whether or not travel restrictions work. This thread is about whether or not travel bans are xenophobic (they aren't) and whether or not Biden is a hypocrite (he is).
That post basically proves my point. Not all travel restrictions are equal. There's the ones Trump and Biden did, that pick specific countries to stop, and then theres the kind those countries did: stopping all traffic and implementing strict 14 day quarantines for any traffic as restrictions eased. Exactly as I said should have been done for meaningful results. South Korea is an example in that article. I just went through their quarantine a couple months ago. If you have a long-term visa (I did) quarantine in your apartment for 14 days: -You cannot leave, your phone must stay on and enable location tracking - you must check in twice a day with symptoms -a health officer assigned to you will call you randomly to make sure you're still with your phone, they'll call immediately if your phone leaves the premise. -They will call if your phone's accelerometer doesn't pick up movement for too long indicating you put it down -Covid tests on the way in, in the middle, and on the way out If you just have a tourist visa, same deal but they put you in a quarantine facility guarded by health officers in hazmat suits. It's brutal, and I don't think we could do anything like it in America, but it works. It's the reason people in a country of over 50 million are starting to freak out over nearing 4000 cases/day, a number that would be miraculous if America came near it. The point being that comparing the travel restrictions cited in your article and the ones imposed by Trump and now Biden are a total false equivalency.
A targeted travel ban is not a largely useless measure. While a complete travel ban would indeed be more effective at cornering COVID, as Trump so often pointed out, the cure cannot be worse than the illness. A complete travel ban, or any other complete shutdown measures would hamstring the economy (yes, we are now suffering the results of liberal's idealistic perspective). You play the percentages . . . you know, the 80 / 20 rule, and the like.
This thread has devolved into a Partial Travel Ban vs. Full Travel Ban discussion which was not my intent. I was just curious about anyone's feelings toward the utter hypocrisy displayed by our current president. If you'd rather not answer, that's fine.
Sigh.... Gene, Whataboutism is not an effective tool of a knowledgeable person. It is certainly of no value to a discussion, for the simple reason that such a tactic informs the reader that the utterings are offered by a person without knowledge of the subject being discussed. In this particular thread, you have returned to display your Ideology of Division, using the JN hammer of Trumpterbation as the weapon chosen to deliver your particular Brand of Whataboutism. I am not surprised.
I answered in my first post. He is hypocritical because he is also making a xenophobic decision. Whether or not travel bans are effective is material to determining if the policy is xenophobic
But it wasn't/isn't "targeted" in that by the time travel with china was shut down it was already deeply entrenched in several other countries that weren't banned. Why didn't we ban them then? The new variant has been discovered in several other countries as well. Why didn't we shut down travel from them now?
