It Was Bound To Happen

Wife is a twenty year employee at a major university and they had a "Holiday" gathering earlier this week. She slipped up and wished one of her peers a Merry Christmas and her HR department was made aware...... Sheesh man... World falling apart all around us and some overly sensitive idiot has nothing better to do than be offended by a warm seasonal greeting.

 

A similar occurrence happened to HER.

The question posed to the grumpy "I hate you all" curmudgeon, was " Name me a World Religion (and accepting that Atheism is a religion of denial, and accepting that Muslim, Buddhist, Islam Et Al are included in the question) that does not recognize Jesus Christ as a biblical holy figure who existed.

The curmudgeon answer: SILENCE.

So, And for those that are hellbent to find fault with the statement that Atheism IS a Religion, I will accept that challenge. I have not been humbled in any debate involving same.

Amazing the things people want to take up arms over. My wife was just simply being polite when she departed the event and was walking by her peers and simply wished them a Merry Christmas.... This one fellow (and I use the term quite loosely) harrumphed quite loudly. Next thing she knew, she got a call from HR. The HR folks were quite understanding thankfully. My wife has that university's phone and internet system held together with duct tape and bailing wire. There isn't another soul on earth that could make that system work.. I had rather wished they would have fired her. I would have hired her and put her in charge of my office HR!

I'll take it. The idea of atheism as a religion makes some sense with how some people practice it. I would self-describe as atheist but no longer consider it like a religion in myself. It's not a core part of my identity, and I believe so little I don't even find it worth dedicating thought and effort to anymore. For some (including my younger self) it's a rebellion to and antithesis of organized religion. But now, it's not that meaningful, it just isn't part of my life since I don't need it and am plenty happy as is.

 

There are plenty of Catholics, Buddhists, Islamists, etc to whom their preferred religion is not central to their being either, yet they are no less labeled than are Atheists. Those labels are more indicative of alignment than of intensity of belief . . . intensity of belief belongs to the extremists.

Back to the point of the thread . . . The Harumpher has no more right to object to utterances of Merry Christmas than does MD's wife to utter them . . . The Wokies need to stop skirting reality and wake up!

 

Who cares what you "take" since you avoid answering direct questions to defend your opinions. I don't.

To the point of this thread, I don't care if anyone wishes me a happy holidays, merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, or even a hail Satan. I will personally say happy holidays because it feels wrong to wish upon something I don't believe in. If others want to wish me well from their faith, I have no issue.

And that really is the point and was far more representative of our society thirty years ago than it is now. For example, since I was old enough to speak I would utter “bless you” if you sneezed. It has been a fifty year automatic response for me. I now feel I have to stop myself to avoid offending someone unintentionally. That something so innocent offered as a polite reply should be considered offensive is just mind blowing to me…… There has been a recent move in my area. This time of year people will put stickers on their cars that say “We say Merry Christmas”. While I agree with the sentiment, it feels like a provocative gesture to me. Fine, say Merry Christmas, but don’t make it a point of contention. That to me is no better than being offended by the sentiment…… Honestly, I don’t know if it is over sensitivity or what that has our entire society so up in arms with one another. But it sure does feel like a hundred year backwards step to me.
