hey just wondered what all your opinions are on the particle "smasher" since they will be turning it on Oct 21st so only a few weeks away?? For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about here is a quick video you can watch to get an idea what its about

    http://video.google.ca/videosearch?...$16 BILLION Particle Accelerator &hl=en&emb=0

for those 2 lazy to watch and just wanna read what they are doing is accelorating hydrogen atoms that have had their electrons stripped from them and launched at about 99.99% the speed of light in two directions so that when they smash togather the scientists can study the resulting bodies that make up the atoms. This might result in the finding of whats known as the "god patricle" or Higgs boson which is what scientists think gives matter its mass if i read it correctly :) It will also allow scientists to get a look at what existed 15-20 seconds after the big bang occured or for some when god snapped his fingers n the lights came on lol. Theres also alot of talk about what will happen when the atoms colide as we know what happens when you release the energy it atoms such as uranium (atom bomb) and it has been spread that possible black holes will occur but as stated by those scientists involved we are fine this has just been doomsday rumors. (mind you if there wrong you wouldn't even know cuz you'd blink n that be it lol)
so what do you guys think about all this? was the 15 billion plus price tag worth finding out how matter works and possibly a little more about the existance of dark matter or was this a waste of time and energy?? also any ideas what other useful technology will come out of this thanks to all this funding?

(ps for those ondering how we get the atoms to go that fast they are using magnetic fields to pull the atoms allot as insane speeds :) )

they are shooting a single beam around this Wednesday...

IDK when the first collision will take place...but I don't like this idea.

I know there is a VERY slim chance of anything bad happening, but a MBH that can get bigger and eventually lead to our doom is not good.

PS: anyone know when they actually are doing the first collision? I heard early '09

Is this the one that is located on Long Island?
I know of a Russian born American at Princeton who also does grants at stanford I believe who was developing computer models of creating black holes. He is suppose to be some sort of genius but I think it is kinda stupid to want to create the ultimate destoryer.

The LHC (Large Hadron Collider) is being done by CERN, the ones that brought us the world wide web.

I don't think we have anything to worry about yet, as they are just circulating the first beams now.

from what i read in the paper the full out collision will not take place until oct 21st so just have 2 wait and see what the scientists decide

was in both the toronto star and toronto sun (suns not really all that great of a resource but figureded they have the date right in both lol)

The guy I knew causally and thru others was playing god with his brains and ego and I thought it was a poor usage of brains. One of the cable news networks had the wording flash underneath the screen during a broadcast which stated that some scientist think that this experiment can end the world by causing a reaction that would take 4 years to develop and then..............................

there are always dooms day sayers before giant scientific breakthroughs

take christopher columubus if he had listened to those ppl saying you'll fall off the world then we would not have found central and north america

people predicted computers would launch all the worlds nuclear weapons at 12:01 jan 1st 2000 but here we are today :)

These people are the top proffesionals in their field. They have there husbands, wives and children living there with them i highly doubt they would preform an experiment where they would put their family in danger.

It starts 3:30 a.m. this morning....

FYI, they are only shooting one beam..not colliding them yet

ha well thats def exciting i take it the collisions oct 21st and that 2marrow is a single beam test :) still gonna be amazing to see what comes out of all this come nov,dec when the entire worlds had a chance to analyze the results

I tend to disagree in that science can get carried away in its own ego and for money. The cloning of animals is to lead to the cloning of humans and that can lead to super virus or bacterias that can cause the slient end of us all. Those spliting atoms, neurtons, quarks, etc should remember that the theory of the big bang was out of something small came something large, anytime we try to unleash power we have no control or real ideas about we are playing with the end of all.

yes i'll agree science can go to far but in the case of cloning its all about how you use it. The cloning of organs can save lives in those who need transplants it all depends when the informations being used for. I don't think there is an issue with all of this but if for some reason it did make a black hole we wouldn't know because we'd all be crushed instantly by the gravity of it. It be like someone turning the lights out thats it :)

my knowledge in science is limited but with that said I must think of how cousins marrying cousins produces bad hybrids and could only wonder what would happen if we recyle the same gene pool over and over ,be it organs or whatever, what could happen, be it bad hybrids or lingering infections/miro-organism such as virus redeveloping into well something bad from the tinkering.

i'm not suggesting the organs will be the same they can take stem cells from your body and grow you new organs using your own DNA so there will be no rejections. Also you won't live forever and case the gene pool to stagnate :) can't clone a working brain thus you will still die just gives people the chance to see their full potential whatever it may be.

If people want a chance to reach their full potential then that's easy enough:kill the TV, stop drinking druging what ever. find a purpose and work hard. It doesnt matter how long someone lives if they have bad or wasteful habits or choose to veg then thats the way it will always be. They will just watch more TV,
