I used to think that this was nonsense. I never wanted them when I was in school but now days I think it is a good idea. I go to many junior high and high school functions and it seems now days the kids all try to outdo one and other. It is sort of disturbing. I feel for the kids that can not afford the $150 pair of shoes or the $100 pair of jeans. way to much competion there. If there were school uniforms it would make it so much easier.
I can see that. I never had to wear one but looking back now it would have been so much easier. We were not poor and I had tons of clothes but my parents could not justify paying over $100 for jeans.
Private schools in these parts tend to have uniforms. Public schools have dress codes and they seem to be getting stricter all the time. Gang affiliation is the main reason unfortunately. Most of the schools now have metal detectors as well. A sad statement on society I'm afraid.
I am not particularly fond of 'uniforms' as they tend to be expensive. Strict Dress Codes, as clembo said, are sometimes a (sad) necessary evil these days. Where we used to live, there were gang problems so the kids had to wear basically khaki pants and plain collared shirts. I think the colors may have been specified too. Can't remember. But I do remember it was strictly enforced. Where we live now, there isn't that kind of gang issue and they enforce more of a dress standard instead. They basically tell the kids what they can't wear instead of what they have to wear...no tears or holes in pants, no underwear showing, no short skirts or short-shorts, no vulgar t-shirts, etc.
Yes they may be expensive but then again so is outfitting your child with lots of clothes. I remember when I was in high school my mom spent over $400 on just me to outfit me to go back to school. Plus she did the same for my two sisters.
But you can get double duty out of regular cloths. Very few kids are going to play or go anywhere outside of school in school uniforms.
My kids aren't playing in skirts or khaki pants and button shirts. At least with jeans and t-shirts, they will last longer than one trip outdoors.
Yet strangley the self same uniform takes weeks and weeks of rough and tumble at school! but it woudnt last one outing after school They must make them of much weaker material these days
Maybe they don't have to be as durable since, if you get rough and tumble in most US schools these days, you will be expelled or jailed. But, like most everything else, the quality probably isn't what it used to be. Denim always seems to be durable, though.
We had to wear shoes and trousers and button shirts in grade school. Not uniforms. But back in the 60's parents didnt let their kids go to school wearing jeans and t shirts and sneakers. I guess it was a status thing. I know alot has changed since then. But soesnt a little kid look better properly dressed than some ragamuffin in dirty sneakers?
Must have changed in the 70ies because I went to school in sneakers. Or maybe there's an economic variable to it. But, even the little rich kids around here don't wear much different to school than my kids do...well except for the labels probably.
Many times the only thing different than the rich and the middle class is the labels. I had some great clothes that were never name brand. I still do not buy name brand for myself. I figure I can be in style without the tag saying i am.
You didn't need name brands to dress for school. I am just saying when I was in elementary school most parents sent their kids to school in pants and a button shirt and shoes. Not jeans and a t shirt and sneakers.
