It is dark and rainy outside during the night and you hear a sound. You think it is someone walking around. Who do you call first? I would call my uncle since he lives behind us. He could get here the fastest.
I'd grab one of my guns, check on the kids (to make sure it's not just one of them ) then confront the situation.
You would call one of your guns? The question was who'd you call not what would you do. Sounds a bit paranoid though.
I'd turn on the outside light, If it turned out to be someone, I'd find out what they were doing. If I thought the police were needed I'd call 'em. But it'd probably be a deer.
It's dark outside and you hear someone moving around outside & you think it's paranoid to grab a gun & check out the situation? Really? Don't know what it's like around your house but on a dark, rainy night chances are my wife & kids are inside. No one has any business being outside my house in that situation. The fact that you think my reaction is paranoid speaks volumes about you....the first words that come to mind are wimpy, maybe sniveling coward. Oh, I know- for that 3:00am call you can call the Clintons!
Be careful about leaving the high ground to confront an unknown threat with limited intel and without backup at least on the way. If you get taken out, the odds of your family surviving probably decrease dramatically and, of course, they might miss you.
Fair enough, and I realize you were speaking more to someone else, or just giving general advice, but I thought I'd respond. My view is that calling someone to check on the situation usually isn't necessary, it's like "crying wolf", something that if done too often would result in your being left without back-up anyway. I agree, you shouldn't confront a possibly dangerous person, but calling back-up before accessing the situation first isn't a good idea either. Good advice otherwise though.
In my case, my dogs are going to assess the situation first. But, you should be able to access the situation from inside the defensive position (your house) and make a reasonable judgement. Decent enough lighting outside to illuminate the general area around your house is always a good idea. Leaving your family to go on a recon is pretty risky. And, no, I am not going to just 'call someone' at all. If the situation seems like it warrants it, the only people I am calling is the police. I am not going to call a friend to come into a potentially dangerous situation just to see if it is or is not dangerous for me. There are people who get paid to do that job and are trained for it. And, I guess it might depend upon where you live but anyone in my yard, in the middle of the night, close enough that I could hear them making noise doesn't happen often enough for any danger of being labeled a wolf crier. And, in my town, the cops wouldn't mind responding. There are only a handful of them - one living down the street - and they would probably love for there to actually be somebody in someone's yard to provide a little excitement. lol
Yeah, in my case, I live in the woods somewhat. I went outside for a smoke once and had a deer staring back at from about 15 feet away. Deer are more likely for me, but have had people nearby also. I viewed from window, they saw me as I reached for something, they probably thought that I was either callin' the cops or grabbin' a gun ...so they bolted lol
