My latest hiatus....

After a few days of laying on the couch, waiting for my wounds to heal from the hernia surgery, I decided to have a little Dharma Bum (it'll mean something to fellow Kerouac fans) adventure to aid the healing process. I gotta say it was incredible. I spent several days in the woods alone....all I took was what I could carry in a large hiking pack. I would highly recommend it to anyone!

Good for you! Until I am banned I can share that I have a Boundary Waters trip planned for July. Canoeing, portaging, camping, sleep, and repeat for several days. The bears, the moose, the bob cats, and especially the timber wolves keep it interesting not to mention the incredible fishing. Looking to buy a new Kevlar canoe this year. The rocks are beginning to take their toll on the old ride. Ah! I can hear the loons now.

I'm so glad you have the great health care package that enables you to recover. Top notch, I'm sure.

For now! But, if he were to lose his current health package, and the Supreme Court does strike down the health care law, someone like him with an incurable, preexisting, chronic medical condition, would be SOL trying to find a new health insurance package of any quality. God does work in mysterious ways eh?

I'm curious, did the doctor recommend that? I ask since my dad died while laying on the couch after hernia surgery. By the way, I've had a hernia for about ten years now. Thankfully it's not debilitating, as there is no way I can afford to have it repaired.

Is that in Northern Minnesota? I remember you went there last year.

He could get medicaid... if he gave away all but $1,500 or so worth of his assets, kept his income under 70% of the poverty level for the five years before he could apply. Cake!

Yes, on the border of Minnesota and Canada. Approximately 1 million acres of pristine wilderness. No motors allowed, limited permits granted at any one time, and lakes with one or two campsites on the entire lake. I go there a lot. You can drink the lake water it is so clean up there.

I had one repaired last July and I didn't even know I had one. The healing can take as much as two years before you stop feeling pain and discomfort at the site. I went back after a few months and asked the doctor if the pain was ever going to go away and all he did was refer me to the pain clinic. I said the heck with that and just started ignoring the pain and it eventually it mostly faded away.

Maybe the laying around was part of the problem? My dr recommended I get active as quickly as I could and he was okay with my "adventure" as long as I didn't over exert myself. It really wasn't a problem....don't underestimate the healing power of a nice, sunny day.

I'm unaware of how long my dad was on the couch, so I can't say whether or not it was more than "a few days" like you said you did:
