This Christmas was fantastically simple, intimate and relaxing for our family. Not only that, it seems most others I've spoken with had similar experiences this Christmas holiday. Less focus on gifts, more time at home with immediate family, and much less racing around.

The days of wrestling with daily complications, of meeting more people in a day than one cares to count, of selfies with so-and-so, of waiting while others post on Facebook, of walking on eggshells over what others don't like hearing . . . they all have weighed on me, and unnecessarily, so getting back to what is really important, and doing so on Christmas Day in particular was truly a treat.

Putting on a good piece of background music and letting it repeat endlessly. Cooking and eating at our leisure, leaving the kitchen a manageable mess. Stoking the fire to the comfort of all, doing a jigsaw puzzle, rubbing backs or feet until eyes shut and smiles widened. Joking around while cleaning up our collective mess, wishing the day would not end.

And end it did, of coarse. But just Christmas Day 2024. My sincerest hope is that America is coming full circle and getting back in touch with her roots . . . simple, intimate and relaxing for more than just that memorable day.
