I suppose that this will be talked about for years and years and I know that I will have to let it sink in in its entirety before I can figure out just what the heck I saw. My initial response is that this guy is in his 80's and just dismiss it as the ravages of age. I really don't know what else to say about it at this point. Was it disrespectful? Unquestionably, but at Clint Eastwood's age I think he has earned the right to disrespect plenty of politicians. If you haven’t seen it, it will be the most memorable 12 minutes of your life.
Probably because it was some of the best political "theater" to come down the pike since, well, ever... What you saw was a man who was speaking from the heart and telling it like it is. You're used to Hollywood stars like Barbara Streisand, Matt Damon or Sean Penn who speak from their ass. Good God! That is the most ageist remark I believe you've ever uttered on this forum! Just what DO you have against people who've walked this earth longer than you? How about, "Brilliant"? How was it disrespectful? Politicians, by their actions, either earn respect or don't. I don't believe Obama has earned any respect, but Clint Eastwood wasn't disrespectful. If these were the "most memorable 12 minutes of your life" then you haven't lived. You need to get out more.
Not surprising lil joe moen wouldn't find the humor in an American icon mocking the person he idolizes, is it?
Clint Eastwood's speech backfires on the Republicans By Peter S. Canellos Compared to his two most recent predecessors, Barack Obama is a difficult man to mock. But on Thursday night at the Republican National Convention, Clint Eastwood tried to do what Saturday Night Live has found to be incredibly difficult: Mine laughs at Obama's expense. And Eastwood's ridiculing tone undercut Mitt Romney's effort to appear more sad than angry at Obama's "failure." The joke, it turned out, was on Eastwood: He looked foolish, and his trademark whisper sounded feeble. Eastwood's ability to keep working at a high level in his 80s has been celebrated. Now his only hope is that people will give him a pass because of his age. But Eastwood's routine didn't fail solely because of Eastwood: It's because of Obama. The idea that this particular president is an empty chair — in Eastwood's strained metaphor — didn't feel right; it didn't connect with anything people know about Obama. Whatever his problems, and there have been many, he's hardly been an empty chair. Behind the scenes, Republicans worry far less about Obama's record than about Obama as an historic figure, the nation's first black president and a symbol of American progress. That's why Romney, in his acceptance speech, tried so hard to take any edge off his criticisms of the president; Romney wanted to cut Obama down to size, but gently, by suggesting that he hasn't really justified the faith that the American people placed in him. Eastwood's mistake was to invite the real Obama back into the room, in the form of that empty chair. Eastwood asked the audience watching on TV to imagine Obama's responses to a bunch of questions. And, surely, the answers the audience envisioned weren't nearly as inane as Eastwood's questions. Obama towered over Eastwood. Did he also tower over Romney?
Clint Eastwood emphasized the point that Obama has been invisible the last four years. "Invisible Obama" is sweeping the country! Bravo, Clint Eastwood! http://twitter.com/InvisibleObama
I still like the guy. I think that he is a talented actor and director. I take solace in the fact that someone that confused and befuddled is a Republican. It just makes sense.
Obama is going to win another term. The republican party is nowhere near as cohesive as it used to be. The extremist element of the party can't see how their lack of tolerance (for anything and everything) has disintegrated the bond that kept the party together. In other words, the republican party is changing and the old timers (like Eastwood) are becoming obsolete.
I thought it was alright. Not great, but alright. But if that was as 'disrespectful' as this campaign gets, it would be a blessing. But it is already too late for that.
I just heard that it is being reported that Eastwood DID have a vetted and approved speech but he decided to go off script and do his own thing. Who'd have guessed?
I think it's hilarious that the leader of the Democrat Party is now epitomized by an empty chair which, as most of us already knew, has been the case since January 20, 2009. View attachment 533 President Empty-Chair
