CIA Director David Petraeus resigns, cites extramarital affair

CIA Director David Petraeus resigned Friday, citing an extramarital affair and "extremely poor judgement."

Multiple sources tell NBC News that Mike Morrell, the deputy CIA director and a longtime CIA officer, would likely be offered the job as acting director but with the understanding that he may be elevated to the job permanently at some point.
That's how George Tenet got the job, first as deputy director in July 1995, then acting director following the resignation of John Deutch in December 1996 and finally as director in July 1997, staying on in the Bush Administration.
Morrell is a longtime CIA analyst and was an eyewitness to two of the most momentous events in recent U.S. history. He was traveling with President George W. Bush on Sept. 11, 2001, as the president's briefer, and was in the Situation Room on May 1, 2011, as deputy CIA Director, when Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden.
    Here is Petraeus' resignation letter:
    HEADQUARTERS Central Intelligence Agency
    9 November 2012
Yesterday afternoon, I went to the White House and asked the President to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign from my position as D/CIA. After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation.
As I depart Langley, I want you to know that it has been the greatest of privileges to have served with you, the officers of our Nation's Silent Service, a work force that is truly exceptional in every regard. Indeed, you did extraordinary work on a host of critical missions during my time as director, and I am deeply grateful to you for that.
Teddy Roosevelt once observed that life's greatest gift is the opportunity to work hard at work worth doing. I will always treasure my opportunity to have done that with you and I will always regret the circumstances that brought that work with you to an end.
Thank you for your extraordinary service to our country, and best wishes for continued success in the important endeavors that lie ahead for our country and our Agency.
    With admiration and appreciation,
    David H. Petraeus

Liberals haven't always felt that way.

    (from Wikipedia):

The MoveOn.org ad controversy began when the anti-war liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org published a full-page ad in The New York Times on September 10, 2007 accusing General David H. Petraeus of "cooking the books for the White House". The ad also labeled him "General Betray Us".[1] The organization created the ad in response to Petraeus' Report to Congress on the Situation in Iraq. MoveOn hosted pages on its website about the ad and their reasons behind it from 2007 to June 23, 2010. On June 23, 2010, after President Obama nominated General Petraeus to be the new top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan (taking over the position from retiring General Stanley McCrystal), MoveOn erased these webpages and any reference to them from its website.[2]

So, what you're saying is -- Liberals advance in their views and change their opinions based upon the situation, while Republicans leave theirs firmly planted in 1950? Is that what you were trying to show?

No! Conservatives recognized the "good man" long before the liberals and then the liberals corrupted him.

Not in the least. MoveOn.org (an extremely liberal organization) painted Petraeus as a Judas during the Bush years. They openly stated that he "betrayed" America and continued to push that label for years. The very day he was appointed CIA Director by Obama, all references to their dislike for Petraeus disappeared from their website. Disingenuous liberal tactics at work again. Personally, I thought Petraeus was a good man. The New York Times and MoveOn.org were wrong in portraying him the way they did. They simply jumped on Petraeus because they didn't like the war in Iraq and they despised Bush and he was a convenient scapegoat. But, when Obama appointed him as CIA Director, the Left conveniently forgot all the bad things they said about him. I don't mind the Left flip-flopping like they do, but at least have the courage to admit it.

Petraeus shouldn't have resigned. He should have just appeared on TV and said something like, "I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Broadwell, I never told anybody to lie, not a single time; never" (or something similar). Now, he won't be required to testify in the Benghazi hearings coming up next week. We may never know to what extent the Obama administration was involved in the Benghazi cover-up.

You can argue cause and effect all you want, but at least the beginning and end are correct unlike Romney owning 51% stake in Bain, unlike Romney committing perjury, unlike Romney taking health away from that poor man wife, unlike Romney paid no taxes the last ten years, etc.

So the cause and effect for liberals making Patraeus have an affair would be.....???? Could you possibly elaborate on that a bit? :)

rlm tends to add that surreal aspect to any thread. I don't know if I approve or not but I always find him entertaining. He says the darnedest things.

Anyway, to sort of expand this thread that has exhausted itself in less than one page, there is a movie that examines sexual attitudes in the military and specifically how he military handles the issue of rape. I know the situation with Patraeus has nothing to do with rape but the movie looks broadly at adultery, homosexual relationships, and of course rape. The movie, the Invisible War, uses the U.S. Military's own statistics and they are shocking. In 2010 alone, there were 19,000 documented violent rapes in the military. A woman is far more likely to be sexually assaulted by a fellow soldier than killed by the enemy. 1 out of every 5 women in he military has reported being sexually assaulted by a fellow soldier. Men are also the victims of sexual assault in the military but in their cases the guy that assaulted them is glorified while his victim is seen as gay and deserving of the assault. The under reporting of sexual assault is even higher in the military than in civilian cases. Often, the victims stated that they didn't report the assault to their CO specifically because it was their CO that assaulted them. See this movie and listen to the victims in their own words. Very powerful.

And another conspiracy theory! No wonder you fringe freaks are so damn ignored. Haven't you learned that Fox just lies to keep idiots like you from figuring out that you are being screwed and that you are helping those screwing you by pushing their lies? Really? You are just going to continue preferring the lies? Unbelievable! Just friggin' unbelievable.

Old white guys from rural America have to be the dumbest people on earth.
