They are not limited to solely "suicide killers", but they actually have such drills. My wife and daughter have been through many when police are chasing someone in the area, serious crime has been reported in the area, etc.

    Interesting.

Not sure what kinds of drills they have in local schools but two elementary were placed on "lockdown" in separate incidents in the past month.

One involved a single engine plane crash. Until they knew what happened it was lockdown.

The other involved an armed home invasion near a school. Lockdown again.

Yet closer to home involved a guy grabbing money from a cash register a few blocks from home.
My wife was home alone at the time and when she saw a police car cruising VERY slowly down our street she decided to lock up the house.

Talking to my neighbor (a single woman) later she told me she saw a guy jump the fence of the neighbor on the other side of her.

It was indeed the perp who was caught thanks to video.

An habitual offender that I just happened to know from the days I managed a truck stop.
A drug dealer that we used to throw off the lot frequently. Just got out of prison and headed right back.

I can see the 'lock down' scenario when there is a suspected or known threat in the area but it might take different procedures when the threat is inside. Unless there are, say, safe rooms that they go in a lock down.

Apparently the murderer stole the guns he used from his mother. She had them for protection. He used one of them to kill her before going off to the school.

When you have a psycho like this, sometimes they even turn on their own parents. It's merely conjecture at this point, but what if she had been armed and able to defend herself against him? As unthinkable as killing one's own child seems, she may have been able to prevent not only her own murder, but that of all the school children, too. As it is, we will never know.

I don't know how it works in other places but locally the police are required to notify the area schools if there is a crime reported or suspected in close proximity to a school. At the schools my daughters attend, upon police notification, the school goes on "lockdown". The classrooms are secured & kids outside the classrooms are escorted to the closest safe area. They drill on this monthly. The same action is taken if there is a breech at the school itself. There are also trained, armed personnel on campus at all times as well as a zero tolerance policy on any form of weapon.

I've been giving that some thought these past few days. There was one thing she could have done to discourage her kid from even thinking about those guns, apart from selling them, and that was a gun-safe.

It would have to be a formidable one, as safes are not really that hard to crack, if someone is determined. Normally, trigger-locks would do the trick, as well as breaking down the gun and keeping the pieces separate and hidden, but again, if her kid was determined, he could easily remove the trigger locks or find the various parts anyway, leaving the gun-safe as the only real option for a gun owner with a kid who has obvious mental issues.

Just look to Chicago to see how the war on guns is going. Strictest laws in the country yet somehow the gun battles taking place would make you think it was Mexico. No way I'd go there in the summer.

FWIW, 24 hrs before the CT massacre, Michigan passed a law allowing people who carry concealed to carry on school property. Sounds pretty extreme until you find out regular people were already allowed to carry a gun OPENLY on school property in Michigan. Now they want to change it so people can only carry concealed. Sitting on the governors desk waiting to be signed.

Illinois has been court ordered to pass a carry bill within the next 180 days (175 now). Hopefully we get a bill re-written to scrap these gun free zones so people might have a chance.

The difference is, the sole purpose of a gun is to kill, whereas, the sole purpose of a car is not, hence the difference in treatment by many.

The New York State Police Benevolence Association just posted an open letter to congress calling for a state police officer in all public schools, is that the type of physical barrier you are referring to?

I can understand your frustration with gun laws Vess.
The problem is (amongst many I might add) is that whether or not you ban guns or make them legal people are going to have them.

Some for home protection (like me) and others for more nefarious reasons. A vigilante society is not the answer.

I live near Gary, Indiana. Guns are legal and guns are a problem for sure. Still, I'm glad I have mine.

Now Stu pointed out that a "War on Guns" would be about as effective as the "War on Drugs". No real argument from me there.

What has become interesting to me in Northwest Indiana is a "War on Gangs". This "war" spills over into Chicago big time.

Gangs are the main reason of "gun warfare" in places like Chicago, Gary, Hammond and East Chicago.
The gangs are spilling over into much smaller communities.

More and more are being infiltrated locally and members are being locked up. Drug and gun violations are the main reasons.

The surface is just being scratched but it's a start.

Gary has had 37 murders this year. From a population of about 90,000. That's kind of alarming but the norm for people that have grown up around here I suppose.

I see where most of the murders occur and knowing that city I'd say a good chunk of that is gang related.

Same goes for East Chicago and Hammond.

Nope. I mean those concrete-reinforced steel pipes they install in front of entrances at high-security buildings, to prevent someone driving through the doors.

I'm NOT in favor of state police being assigned kindergarten duty, but if schools want to follow the airlines example in hiring gun-toting security, I guess I could handle that...as long as the guy wasn't obvious about carrying the gun. Kids don't need that kind of stress.

Assuming such a law passes, where security must be in EVERY public school, who pays for that? We know schools have budget problems, thanks to Republican efforts, so where's the funds coming from? I don't see Republicans willing to allow for increased funding, so now what?

Nothing like having a gun to protect yourself from any bad guys who might be in the area. Even better, have lots of them.

I tend to think a home defense shotgun is all most people would need to protect themselves and their home from bad guys or gals. Maybe a second shotgun or a basic 9mm if you feel the need for 2 tools for home defense or your SO is qualified and willing.

Owning and advertising a gun collection probably increases your chances of being a target. Not of matricide, mind you, but just in general.

However, I think having a garage full of splitting axes is prudent for when the ZA happens.

The irony is that she wasn't even afforded the opportunity to attempt to defend herself. Things might have turned out completely different had she been armed, but like I said before, that's conjecture. Perhaps the lesson learned from this story is to stay armed at all times?

Oh yeah. That's the kind of society I want to live in.

I don't believe anyone WANTS to live in a society like that but, realistically speaking, with psychopaths and criminals running loose it's practically a necessity. I would love to live in a utopia too, but I'm a realist.
