Is that what we're calling half-wits these days? "realists?"

In a civilized society you don't need to carry a deadly weapon about with you for protection. You don't need to arm elementary school teachers. You don't need to have a gun at the ready to feel safe in your own home. But you say that living any other way is a Utopian dream. Not in the countries we consider our peers it's not. They think we're insane.

Walk alone down some inner city streets in Detroit, Chicago or New Orleans and tell me that we live in a "civilized society". There are animals there (and many other places, too) who would just as soon rape you and slice your throat as look at you. Animals like those have branched out to areas that include educational institutions, too (Columbine, Virginia Tech & Sandy Hook to name three), so people aren't really safe anywhere. No... civilization is merely a thin veneer; don't fool yourself into believing otherwise.

I guess your "civilized society" locks up (or otherwise takes care of) every person who has ever had or might sometime have mental or societal problems. I can think of a couple people who would not make it into your "civilized society".

It's amazing how you guys don't get it. I recently spent a week in a city of over 12 million people in a country not the US and I was able to go anywhere I wanted on fast clean public transit and I never once felt in danger nor was i ever warned against going into certain parts of town or advised to take a cab rather than walk or take the subway. I've spent extended periods of time there over the years so this came as no surprise. Just a welcome change. And proof that not everyone is like us.

Well, good for you. I'm happy that you're safe, but please realize that not everywhere you go is a crime-free zone. There are people who must live around some of these scum I've mentioned and have every right to defend themselves against them.

And this is who we have to compare ourselves to in order to come out looking okay? We used to group America with Western Europe, Japan, Singapore.... Now it's Nicaragua.

And just what is wrong with Nicaragua?

Taiwan seems to have a large number of homicides. So does Montenegro, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. Communist Cuba is up there and Socialist Venezuala is practically off the charts. Turks and Caicos is double the U.S. rate.

Friends of mine just returned from the Bahamas and they said they enjoyed the most beautiful beaches, wonderful people, tastiest food and the greatest, relaxing atmosphere of their lives. But, the Bahama's homicide rate is seven times the rate for the U.S. How were my friends not slaughtered the moment they walked off the plane? Perhaps it was the area of the Bahamas in which they were staying? There are areas in the paradise-on-earth Bahama's where they shouldn't venture and, if they do, they'd best arm themselves if they want to survive.

Bull! Every city, in every country has it's seedier areas. I've traveled all over the world & can't recall a city I've visited where I wasn't warned about some area or another.

    At the risk of this getting sidetracked, try reading this;

The guns are there and they will not disappear for centuries let alone what people will make. We need to work on the problem that can be and should be fixed not what we can only dream of.

I am surprised we are so good considering we have such as porous border with such a violent part of the world. I don't think you can look at violence and murder in the US without taking into consideration the international drug trade and the associated organized crime element.

I would try to warn you off of traveling period. Our rep in too many places overseas is bad enough as it is.

Thank you. Second time in a week we've found some sort of common ground.

I'm surprised Canada does so well even though it shares a border with us.

Which we fund with our demand for their products.

    Unreal, but so-be-it.

It seems our dissenter seems to have disappeared after his melt down.

I can understand why. I'm about to do the same. Can only take so much of this at a time. Keep the doors bolted and if you must venture outside make sure you're well armed. The crazies could attack at any time you know.
