Net Migration from Mexico Falls to Zero—and Perhaps Less
by Jeffrey Passel, D’Vera Cohn and Ana Gonzalez-Barrera

The largest wave of immigration in history from a single country to the United States has come to a standstill. After four decades that brought 12 million current immigrants—most of whom came illegally—the net migration flow from Mexico to the United States has stopped and may have reversed, according to a new analysis of government data from both countries by the Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center.

The standstill appears to be the result of many factors, including the weakened U.S. job and housing construction markets, heightened border enforcement, a rise in deportations, the growing dangers associated with illegal border crossings, the long-term decline in Mexico’s birth rates and broader economic conditions in Mexico.

It is possible that the Mexican immigration wave will resume as the U.S. economy recovers. Even if it doesn’t, it has already secured a place in the record books. The U.S. today has more immigrants from Mexico alone—12.0 million—than any other country in the world has from all countries of the world.1 Some 30% of all current U.S. immigrants were born in Mexico. The next largest sending country—China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan)—accounts for just 5% of the nation’s current stock of about 40 million immigrants.

Are you proud of the fact that Obama has screwed up the economy so dab that Mexicans are now better off staying in Mexico?

Right! It was Obama that started the Great Recession in 2008 before he was elected. I forgot.

I got it! After 5 years, it is still all Bush's fault. And when the debt inundates us, that will be Bush's fault. And when the medicare system limits the availability for the $20,000 policy, somehow that will also be Bush's fault. Well, maybe I have to agree with you. Bush should have realized what an idiot was going to follow him and made the government idiot proof.:D

A lot of the reasons for the reversal annoys me, because I believe in a more open border and have a strong distaste for the hatred spewed at people South of the border who come here to work and live.

In time, Hispanics will gain more and more power here, and the thought frightens many. Eventually Southern states will be under their control, no matter what detractors do.

I myself have some nervousness, as Hispanics are generally religious, but I am less so than I was in the 80s. Back then, I had the feeling that Hispanics were more republican than Democrat, and the repercussions of that would be disastrous for the country. Even so, I still believed in a more open border and my compassion wasn't compromised.

Those feelings of anxiety haven't completely abated, but several factors have relieved it somewhat.

While I still worry that religion will convince many Hispanics to align themselves with republicans in the future, the republican policy towards Hispanics over the last thirty years has been so awful that many Hispanics would never consider the possibility.

In addition, I've seen many studies over the years that indicate Hispanics are moving away from the republican party, at a pretty stable pace. Time will tell whether or not they stay away though. Some republicans have finally seen the writing on the wall (hey, it only took them thirty years), and it's not inconceivable that this movement be reversed, if they can only get past themselves, of course.

In the meantime, I have to congratulate the republicans for being so self-destructive. The thought of the party being reasonable enough to regain a majority of voting Hispanics is chilling, but I'm confident that the republicans simply can't help themselves and will continue to annoy the very audience they must gain support from to survive.

Dumb asterisks that they (republicans in power) are lol

I think we need to start going back to every single president in the past and begin blaming them. This whole "blame Bush for everything" is getting old. If Obama had any cojones, he'd take responsibility for what he's done against this country.

That's right. Blaming Bush for everything he did is just wrong. If it helps, I also blame the banks. Bush was merely the puppet they used to rip-off the world. That is all every Right-winger ever amounts to if elected. Somehow, Obama was supposed to fix everything overnight that it took Bush 8 years to destroy. Nobody claimed it was possible but we have made a lot of progress even as the Right-wing congressional puppets try to return to unregulated banks gambling with the economy. They just never stop trying to run this country into the ground. You idiots are too proud to admit that it was 8 years of Bush and unregulated banking that drove this country to the edge of ruin so you blame everything on the guy who is actually fixing the problems. Why not show up at the next apartment building fire and complain that the firemen aren't putting out the fire fast enough. It makes about as much sense as your argument.
