There are still rational Republicans outside of the cult of Trump

Albeit a much smaller number than those that are adherents of the cult of the one true leader, there are still Republicans that have principles and a moral compass. However, because the current Republican Party has no platform other than devotion to a cult of one man, Republicans across the country are leaving the party in disgust.

February 10, 2021 By Taegan Goddard

“In the days after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, the phone lines and websites of local election officials across the country were jumping: Tens of thousands of Republicans were calling or logging on to switch their party affiliations,” the New York Times reports.

“An analysis of January voting records by The New York Times found that nearly 140,000 Republicans had quit the party in 25 states that had readily available data (19 states do not have registration by party). Voting experts said the data indicated a stronger-than-usual flight from a political party after a presidential election, as well as the potential start of a damaging period for G.O.P. registrations as voters recoil from the Capitol violence and its fallout.”

Yeah.... There are still many of us. I am not proud of the train wreck that ended the Trump presidency, but the core conservative values are the values that I believe in so I don't see myself running down to the voters registration office to change my affiliation...... You know, I think back forty years and I can remember similar headlines. Poor Jimmy Carter, though he was certainly of high moral character was a truly hapless leader. Then Reagan came along and was the polar opposite. People loved him, were proud to call themselves American and it seemed the Democratic train was headed toward a cliff. Many people as well as many ranking politicians changed political affiliation to Republican just to survive...... So in all reality, this is nothing new. The tides have turned, we have new leadership and the train keeps a-rollin'.

The main difference is that this isn't about conservative values or principles, the current GOP is about a cult of personality. The cult of one man. Trump is the Republican Party. You can have any values you want but you can't both support the party of Trump and pretend you are also what used to be the Conservative Party. If the world worked as it should, we would see the Democrats and their more liberal Green Party wing and then we would see the Trump Party and their more conservative wing....I guess it would be call the Greed Party.

Well, sadly I do not see any Reagan's on the horizon for my side, nor do I see any JFK's on the horizon for yours. The political machine used to bring the cream of the crop to the surface. It is now a pageant show..... I simply loathe government interference. It is simple as that. I believe I am a better judge of my path than the government is. That used to be a defining conservative principal for me, though I am not entirely sure that defines conservatism these days..... What is greed? Is it defined by financial rewards for exceptional effort? Is it defined by letters behind my name or titles before it? I just don't know any longer because I see it being redefined before my very eyes. I am sorry for rambling. I am quite disappointed in what I see these days. I see a path being blazed toward national apathy and I cannot do anything about it. I am just disheartened at the whole thing anymore.

We certainly aren't getting the best and the brightest in our politicians these days. Maybe we never did and were just too naïve to know it? That is a systemic problem that our system of government has created. I think greed figures heavily into that dynamic. For a country that has so much wealth, we sure don't take care of the least of our brothers do we? Social injustice is a by-product of the same greed that infects our political system. We have high ideals in theory, just not in practice. There are too many of us that pretend that all men are created equal while ignoring the evidence to the contrary right in front of their eyes. A system built on lies, alternative facts, and indifference to a portion of it's citizenry will inevitably crumble under the weight of it's own hypocrisy because people will demand it. Why not head off this future by making the present the ideal we profess to honor?

Unfortunately the Republican party has become a stagnant swamp of power hungry pussies for the most part.

    Damn shame.

Never thought I'd see myself applauding Liz Cheney but she deserves it. She's got way bigger balls than most of her constituents.

A cult of one man. So why is the left so obsessed with Trump? Impeach me now, impeach me later, demonizing, shutting down his social media accounts while your side says much worse. Hint, you won. He's no longer in office. Your guy is writing more executive orders as you read this. Can't you just let it go. No, let's impeach, and if that doesn't work, let's convict him of looking into Georgia. Orange Man Bahahad.

Trump is a cancer on democracy. You don't just ignore cancer. You remove it.

...but wouldn't it be more logical and better for the country if we just moved on?

It worked out so well for the entire world when a guy name Hitler hit the scene after all.

So, what would make you shut up about Trump. Prison? Execution? Camps for his staffers and supporters? Re-education for the 70 million who voted for him? I've heard all these suggested from you poor winners. What's enough? Just curious. Evidently winning with a majority in both houses and the Presidency isn't.

Prison would be a good start.

He set a dangerous precedent for this nation and one that should be dealt with accordingly to avoid it from occurring again.

Many of those 70 million have pulled their collective heads from their hinies on their own. Others refuse and let's face it you can't re-educate willful blindness and ignorance.

Let's just get over it. Said the new leader for life of the Banana Republic.

I have to ask.... Why do you want me or anyone to "shut up about Trump"? Enough for me would be accountability. Republicans don't even seem willing to hold Trump accountable for an insurrection. They have all but voted to acquit him in advance. You seem to want to sweep accountability under the rug and I would love to know why. It was never about winning or losing. That is just a convenient oversimplification.

We just came within inches of losing our democracy for the benefit of an authoritarian dictator wannabe and 70 million of you were/are willing to overlook the entire incident. I want to know why? Why are 70 million of you so willing to fall at the feet of this brazen slime bag?

I believe that the rational among us recognize that this nation is much bigger than one man and his ego.

Would you consider 44 Republican Senators rational? I'm not seeing it. There certainly are rational Republicans. They are just few and far between. You can't ignore that 70 million people lived through the same 4 years of Trump that I did and chose to vote for 4 more years of it. I don't know where these rational Republicans are residing, but I can tell you where the vast majority of Republicans stand. They stand right behind Trump. The exception does not make the rule. This is a cult of one man. The Dear Leader. The sooner Republicans acknowledge that and move beyond their grooming, the sooner the Republican Party can heal itself and move forward. I'm not holding my breath.

Then you are on par with the the likes of the historically famous people that were complicit in the crimes and atrocities committed by agreeing to something or approving it without actually saying so, because you are unwilling to admit to doing so. That isn't a great look to be sporting in the history books my friend.

I know it is hard to see when it is happening in real time. I can't even say that I saw what happened coming in advance. Nobody really did to the extent it actually happened. We were lulled into a false sense of complacency by 200 plus years of fairly honorable men. It just goes to show that democracy is a fragile agreement that we have to monitor constantly else we risk being duped into our own undoing.
