To be perfectly transparent, I don't actually mind that he's backed out for now. I also think the presidential debates should happen after the candidates are formally confirmed at their conventions. For reference, the first presidental debate in 2020 was in late September.

However, it was Trump saying just days ago in your post that he'd commit to multiple with Harris right away. Also, the next scheduled debate is after the Dem convention is done, so it's weird he'd back out now.

Politically, I think it would be a more savvy move for him to say something like: "I'll still be there in September, no matter who the Dems confirm. I wish Kamala the best of luck in staying the nominee until then."
