Your little history lesson about the derivation of "Ma'am" is irrelevant. In the military "Ma'am" is equivalent to "Sir" and military personnel are required to use these when addressing someone of a higher rank. Proper protocol may dictate the use of the term "Senator" but that does not mean that it is disrespectful to use "Ma'am". It is obvious to everyone that the General's use of the word "Ma'am" is out of habit and not disrespectful. Furthermore, if the General thought that it was acceptable to address the Senator as "Ma'am", I will assume that it acceptable regardless what your manual states. BTW, you don't need to concede anything, we already know you are wrong.
In question to you. To everyone else its Boxer's behavior thats in question. Why is that do you think?
She was 100% right. All you guys have offered is your hatred of her while I provided the military protocol for this situation. Yet, hating Boxer isn't how you choose to portray your position but it does come through clearly enough. Put your hatred aside for a moment and judge this situation by the only standard that matters, the actual protocol. All I've seen so far is opinions backed by emotional nonsense. No one has convinced me to change my opinion with any facts so far.
I dont hate her. Where did I say that? Is she above reproach. Can she not be wrong because she is a senator? Protcol is not a law. If I were to meet the queen of England and just said, ''Hey babe.''. I dont think I'd be arrested. Not that I would. But if i called her Ma'am and not your heiness, I truly dont think she'd correct me like some petty idiot. Ohhhh protocol. Take heed.
Protocol is the ONLY standard by which you can judge this situation. Protocol is not law is irrelevant. You guys simply refuse to let go of your emotions and see this for what it really is, a breach of military protocol. I've never even said that Boxer knew the protocol but the General certainly didn't know it. He should have! And blaming her for asking him follow is own organization's rules is just plain absurd. From the transcript I see that she handled it pretty gently and he came off sounding like a clown. "Yes Ma'am" Duhhhh, I mean Senator.
You guys have to realize this argument really hits home to Dr Moen. Boxer's reaction to being called ma'am probably paled in comparison to the good doctor's reaction if one of those college kids failed to address him by title.
Craig you would be visiting the Tower of London LOL your initial greeting if meeting Queenie should be "Your Majesty" and then simply "Ma'am" after that.
I find it interesting that when addressing the President of the United States in a prolonged conversation it would be appropriate to use "Sir" or "Ma,am". When addressing the Queen in a prolonged conversation it would be appropriate to use "Ma'am". But when addressing a United States Senator in a prolonged conversation, it is inappropriate, and one must use the word "Senator" all the time. Mind boggling!
Maybe it is because Sir or Ma'am is more of a show of deference and respect whereas a title is just....well...a title. "Yes, Senator" is not much different than "Yes, Janitor". Or "Yes, Garbageman" or "Yes, Electrician". But, "Yes Sir" or "Yes Ma'am" is a much different thing.
Yup. Thats how petty she was being . I heard there is a parody of exactly what you are talking about. Where everyone in that room says something as dumb as her. I wish I could find it.
Hey, Jon Stewart just called the president of the United States, "dude" last night on his show. Obama made a comical reference. Stewart: "You don't wanna go there, 'dude'. " Does moen want to run his hero out of town on a rail now? You want to hash that out for us too? BTW, to Obama's credit (or discredit) he didn't even care. Just don't disrespect Boxer (if you see her out on the street after next Tuesday).
Somebody has a man crush on the President... lol I do have some respect for Jon Stewart taking some definitely non-bromance jabs at the President. “What have you done that we don't know about? Are you planning a surprise party for us, filled with jobs and health care?” He didn't just sit their all googly-eyed and give him just a free campaign commercial.
