Social Security fund now seen to be empty by 2037 - Yahoo! News

Left-wing, socialistic liberalism doesn't work, folks. Sure, you can ride high on the hog for a while, but it eventually catches up. I wish the Socialists would go to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics where they belong... oh, wait... the USSR failed, too. Hmmm, ok how about Cuba? That's a nice, utopian paradise.

    Socialism sux......

Seems I remember when George Dimwit took office, I heard the exact same sort of hot air about SSI going broke. Only difference I recall is that it was going to happen in the 20 teens. So we had to privatize it. Rescue it from the dreaded socialist destruction. Now the same thing, except it's 2037. Is there anything you republicans won't do to "incorporate" every and any thing into private hands? You all whine about the socialist commie takeover constantly, but it is your corporate "business" collective wall street mentality that has us all on the brink of collapse! If your stinkin' corporate structure of profit and consolidation of wealth is so damn great, why hasn't it fared any better to this point?

Being a republican profiteering shill sux even worse.

Considering how long Social Security has been around why haven't the "non Socialist, non Liberal yada yada" administrations fixed it? I really want to know.

Social Security supporters are adamant that the program will be repaid, just as the U.S. government repays others who invest in U.S. Treasury bonds.

"Its' an IOU that is backed by Treasury bonds and the faith and credit of the United States government," said Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. "It is the same faith and credit that enables us to borrow from rich people and from China and from other countries. As you well know, in the history of this country, the United States has never defaulted on one penny owed to a creditor"

    ...yet.

Precisely! Then it will fall like a house of cards. When you have more people taking OUT of the system than are putting IN, it's only sustainable for a short period of time.

Yeah...then we bailed Wall street out....too big to fail, so we financed excess, CEO bonuses, and casino losses. I say SSI is too big to fail and deserves at least the same rewards Wall street criminals received and other recipients received as determined by the "market forces" the right is so much in favor of. Point is the "house of cards" has already fallen. The big boys want to scoop up what's already fallen down to stuff in their pockets.
If capitalism like Wall street can be sustained, then so can SSI.

So "SSI is too big to fail and deserves at least the same rewards [as] Wall street"? I guess that includes cutting everyone SSI pay too.

What a bunch of hyperbolic nonsense. The Social Security system has been in place for over 70 years and helped countless citizens from being tossed into the streets. 25 years ago, congress had to fix SS and it was extended decades into the future. The same thing will likely happen again.

Republicans are bent on throwing the SS funds at Wall Street as Bush suggested in 2005. Where would we be today if the Democrats had allowed that to happen? Private industry after private industry has raided, under funded or just stolen pension funds form their employees and the Republicans want us to give them our SS funds now.

Here is what one famous Republican president said about this issue...

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

    President Dwight D. Eisenhower, l952-----

    He was right!!

What is wrong with addressing the abuses of the system?
You read story after story of people receiving social security benefits (primarily disability) for bogus disabilities, being overweight, because their brains are fried from drugs. Additionally, benefits are paid to the children of these people as well.
I doubt any Repub would advocate taking a dime away from people who have worked hard all their lives and paid into the system. The abuse is what needs to be looked at.

Neither party wants to touch social security. So, it will just die when we can no longer pay for it. By that time, social security will be the least of our problems, of course. The politicians certainly know it. Why else would they cut the payroll deduction for it when it is already in trouble? Because they know it is going to fail anyway so they don;t really care about funding it.

I'm not saying we can get rid of it. Simply put, people have become used to sucking off the government's teet. You can't just pull the plug. But, does Social Security work? Obviously NOT it it's going broke. But, that's socialism for you....

You simply don't understand the demographic issues behind the problem. And I find it hard to believe that people would work for 45 plus years at some job the whole time dreaming about living off the government's teet which oddly enough in reality is just people getting back the money they paid in. Someone needs to explain socialism to you.

Why not? If the fat cat corporate casino players are too big to fail, and I as a taxpayer am required to bail them out for their abuses, what's the difference? If they can "suck off of our teet", why isn't the reverse applicable?? My kids and grandkids will be paying for the corporate crime committed by the most of those same fat cats whether I, or they, want to or not. Those that are pissed on by this screwball system may as well scoop up the remains before the right comes up with a way to take that too.

If I don't understand the issues behind the problem, will you please enlighten us as to what those issues are? Why is there a problem in the first place? Please explain how these hard-working people will be able to get their money back from an entity that has no money? If more people begin taking money out of the system than are putting money in, how can it possibly sustain itself? With a whole lot of baby boomers approaching retirement, the funds will be quickly depleted.

Also, it's not just "getting back the money they put in". Some people get more money (if they live a long life) and some people get less money (if they die sooner). That's the bet that Social Security has always relied on. But, with more people entering retirement age, more money is being paid out than what is coming in. It's not a financially reliable system. It's failing and it was doomed to eventual failure since its inception. You can't argue that the system is failing. You may argue the causes of the failure, but it's basic socialistic premise is its downfall. You can't expect to have anything left if you put a dollar in your piggy bank for yourself every day, but take two dollars out for your friends every other day.

The health care sham is going to work the same way.

I'm pretty much in agreement with David until the last paragraph. Would love to see the abuse stopped and it's been going on for a long time.

I'll seriously ask again here OKC. If it's all "socialism, yada yada yada" why hasn't a good Republican Conservative fixed it? Been plenty of time to do so IMHO. Your "socialist" rant grows old here.

For the record I'm not too thrilled with Social Security. I MIGHT see some of it and I have worked all my life.
In the meantime I work for a guy that is 67. I see people that have done well trying to hide as much income as they can to get the best SS benefits they can. I can kind of understand this as they have, after all, paid a lot of money into this "socialist" program.
What does bother me (and believe me I hear it on a VERY regular basis) is their rants about socialism and working the system. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

Bottom line is this. There are a great number of Republican/Conservatives working the systen when it comes to SS. The very same people that cry about "socialism" yet use it to their full advantage.
