    The Bay Area Center for Voting Research has revealed the most conservative city and most liberal city in America. The most conservative is Provo, UT. The most liberal is Detroit, MI:

    The Milken Institute has released a study on the Best Performing Cities in the top 200 metropolitan areas. Provo, UT came in at #9 and Detroit came in at #194:

    There are many factors involved in the rankings of these cities and you can glean whatever information you wish from these statistics which include Job Growth and Wages & Salary Growth as factors.

    Detroit has certainly been hit with negative job growth. The automotive manufacturing business is a contributing factor in that, but is it too far off to spectulate that Detroit is just becoming a bad place to live?

    Well, I am not sure that conservatism or liberalism has anything to do with either one of these cities. I think it is job growth and the industries that are located in each city.

    Then I wonder why the most conservative states have the lowest unemployment and the most liberal states have the highest job losses.

    IYO. The rest of us seem to understand it. Although there is still another to weigh in.

    I find it ironic that blue states subsidize reds states with their taxes. The wealth and the population is in the blue states. The least populated states tend to ne red and rural.

    The red state ripoff

    Over at the Fourth Branch, they've got a nice map showing the states that receive more than a dollar back for every dollar they pay in taxes (which they've coded red), and the states that receive less than a dollar back for every dollar they pay in taxes (which they've coded blue). Just to repeat: Red states are getting a good deal, and blue states a bad one. Here's the map:
    [IMG]

    Remind you of anything?

    Fourth Branch comments:

    There is a very strong correlation, then, between a state voting for Republicans and receiving more in federal spending than its residents pay to the federal government in taxes (the rust belt and Texas being notable exceptions). In essence, those in blue states are subsidizing those in red states. Both red and blue states appear to be acting politically in opposition to their economic interests. Blue states are voting for candidates who are likely to continue the policies of red state subsidization while red states are voting for candidates who profess a desire to reduce federal spending (and presumably red state subsidization).

    I understand why you'd think that the correlation between being conservative and performance is important, but IMO it's mostly immaterial. There are many other factors involved that define a cities performance. Some easy factors to consider are age, size, and location. Other factors are more complex, dealing with the relationships between factors. How many people were born into poverty or wealth, what public transportation is available for who, how stable the infrastructure is... the point being that whether a city is populated by more conservatives than liberals isn't a true indication that it will perform better than a city populated with more liberals than conservatives.

    And you can use your same logic with moen's map that does not correlate.

    Correct, the ratio of received federal monies to those spent is only one factor on why there are red and blue states..

    So you are saying that all the more liberal states have higher unemployment than conservative states. I just don't believe that. I think it has to do with the industry that is in each state, I really do.

    And you think the industry in the state is independent of the politics? Or that the politics is independent of the industry?

    So you think that industry is part of politics and not independent of politics? If that is true and they are part of politics, then the conservatives are winning that battle if all your arguments are correct. I do think that tax codes, location to transportation and good infrastructure, as well as the availability of quality employees, play a bigger role in where a company builds there next plant.

    Maybe Milken isn't the best person to be talking advice from...

    Milken was indicted on 98 counts of racketeering and securities fraud in 1989 as the result of an insider trading investigation. After a plea bargain, he pled guilty to six securities and reporting violations but was never convicted of racketeering or insider trading. Milken was sentenced to ten years in prison and permanently barred from the securities industry by the Securities and Exchange Commission. After the presiding judge reduced his sentence for cooperating with testimony against his former colleagues and good behavior, he was released after less than two years. His critics cited him as the epitome of Wall Street greed during the 1980s, and nicknamed him the "Junk Bond King".

    I am not sure I would use the term "part of", but they are definitely not independent of each other. The last I checked, farmers tended to be republican and union members tended democratic. If you have an area full of farmers, it is usually Republican and when you have an area full of unions, it tends to be with the Democrats. There are several more such examples.

    Maybe you should consider forgiving the man. Regardless, you're not taking advice from him, but rather reviewing the facts presented by the non-profit, non-partisan institute.

    In 1982, Milken and his brother Lowell founded the Milken Family Foundation to support medical research and education. Through the Milken Educator Awards (founded in 1985), the MFF has awarded a total of more than $60 million to more than 2,500 teachers. Among the other initiatives of the Milken Family Foundation are the:
    • Milken Institute, a non-profit, non-partisan economic think tank whose scholars publish research papers and conduct conferences on global and regional economies, human capital, demographics and capital markets. Each spring, the Institute hosts a Global Conference in Los Angeles;
    • Milken Scholars, a program that provides outstanding high school graduates with a commitment of four years of college financial assistance, counseling, volunteer opportunities and preparation for graduate studies;
    • TAP: The System for Teacher and Student Advancement, a comprehensive research-based strategy to attract, develop, motivate and retain high-quality teachers for America's schools;
    • Mike's Math Club, a curriculum enrichment program that shows students in inner-city elementary schools that math is not only useful, but entertaining;
    • Festival for Youth, a school-based community service program that engages students in yearlong service projects to help build vibrant communities; and the
    • Milken Family Foundation Epilepsy Research Awards Program, which funds research to understand and conquer epilepsy.
    Upon his release from prison in 1993, Milken founded the Prostate Cancer Foundation for prostate cancer research. Milken himself was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in the same month he was released. His cancer is currently in remission. The Prostate Cancer Foundation works closely with Major League Baseball through its Home Run Challenge program to promote awareness of prostate cancer and raise money for medical research. Each season in the weeks leading up to Father's Day, Milken visits many ballparks and appears on TV and radio broadcasts during the games.

    In 2003, Milken launched a Washington, D.C.-based think tank called FasterCures, which seeks greater efficiency in researching all serious diseases. A key initiative of FasterCures is Biobank Central, which is advancing life sciences research in areas as diverse as autism, psoriasis and breast cancer.
    The Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA) was launched in 2007 to support innovative translational studies that advance the diagnosis, staging and treatment of melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer.

    Fortune magazine called Milken "The Man Who Changed Medicine" in a 2004 cover story on his philanthropy.[

    Unfortunately, if you want him to correlate EXACTLY, you'll have to explain why John McCain isn't President. Because if your little map exercise above was EXACT (your emphasis!), then John McCain would be President. Unless your argument is like Max Weber's - good from a distance, but the specifics don't hold up.

    The economic state of industries in each state is a significant factor, and it is one of many, many, many factors that influence a states "performance", or in this case, unemployment. I'd agree though that, for most states, it's the largest influence in employment, unemployment, "performance", etc.
