Any comments on the pompous, bag-of-wind Bill Maher?

COMMENTARY | Recently Rush Limbaugh, the conservative talk show host, and Bill Maher, host of the HBO show "Real Time," demonstrated different ways of how to deal with similar mistakes. The two approaches by the different men speak much to their character.

Limbaugh has apologized to Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown University law school student whom he insulted, according to Hot Air. "My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir," Limbaugh said. "I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices." Limbaugh owned up to his mistake and behaved as any gentleman should.

Maher has chosen a different approach, according to the Daily Caller. In the opening monologue of his show, Maher took note of a previous monologue by Limbaugh in which he compared his own behavior toward Fluke with Maher's vile and obscene insults toward Sarah Palin. In Maher's view, unlike Limbaugh, he does not have to apologize.

Maher's excuse goes like this. Limbaugh has sponsors to which he is responsible. Some of Limbaugh's sponsors have pulled their advertising in the wake of the storm he has stirred. But Maher, since his show airs on a pay-for-view cable network HBO, does not have sponsors. Ergo, Maher can say anything he wants, even insulting a lady with words that cannot be reproduced here.

Maher misses the point. One does not apologize for making a mistake only if some outside institution or people apply pressure. One apologizes because it is the right thing to do.

To be sure, there are instances, articulated by John Wayne's iconic character in "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," in which he famously said, "Never apologize. It's a sign of weakness." Neither the case of Limbaugh with Fluke not Maher with Palin applies. Neither woman deserved what they got.

Apologizing in such circumstances is quite easy, as demonstrated by Limbaugh. It consists of the following:
    What I did was wrong.

    I am sorry about it.

Everything else, while necessary in some cases to provide context, is usually supercilious to the task at hand.
Limbaugh managed to swallow his pride and showed himself to be a man and a gentleman by doing so. Maher, by making excuses, showed himself to be something else entirely.

I didn't hear Limbaugh's comments until last night. What he said was outrageous. He got called on the remarks & rightly had to apologize.

I am (though I shouldn't be. I guess) amazed, though, at the hypocrisy of the left? Where were/are you guys when conservative women are called so much worse?

I am not outraged. In fact, I wish that he would make all kinds of similar comments. He is the best reason the Democrats could ever point to for voting for the Democrats. How many women just changed their vote from Republican to Democrat? With the Right-Wing war on women across the country, Rush only reinforces the very accurate perception that the Right-wing wants to keep women in their place. Keep it up Rush!

NEW YORK — A flower company is the seventh advertiser to pull its ads from conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh's radio program in reaction to his derogatory comments about a law student who testified about birth control policy.
ProFlowers said Sunday on its Facebook page that it has suspended advertising on Limbaugh's program because his comments about Georgetown University student Sandra Fluke "went beyond political discourse to a personal attack and do not reflect our values as a company."
The six other advertisers that say they have pulled ads from his show are mortgage lender Quicken Loans, mattress retailers Sleep Train and Sleep Number, software maker Citrix Systems Inc., online data backup service provider Carbonite and online legal document services company LegalZoom.

    THIS...is an apology?

    A Statement from Rush

    March 03, 2012
For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. (Rationalization) In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. (What were the right words Rush?) I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke. (It's hard to take being called a slut and a prostitute as anything else but and attack. )
I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress (Yet you have no problem insulting this young woman for 3 days and 9 hours?) . I personally do not agree that American citizens should pay for these social activities (Rationalization for you behavior. Disagree don't attack for over three days). What happened to personal responsibility and accountability? (Straight forward rationalization.) Where do we draw the line? (Straight forward rationalization.) If this is accepted as the norm, what will follow? (Straight forward rationalization.) Will we be debating if taxpayers should pay for new sneakers for all students that are interested in running to keep fit?In my monologue, I posited that it is not our business whatsoever to know what is going on in anyone's bedroom nor do I think it is a topic that should reach a Presidential level.(Where the hell did the apology go?.)
My choice of words was not the best (Really? You came to that conclusion on your own?.) , and in the attempt to be humorous(Yeah, women are laughing their asses off.), I created a national stir. I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices. (Losing sponsors will have that affect.)

Now 9 sponsors have dumped his program. I'm sure the RW'ers will paint this as the rest of us trying to silence a RW voice. I can't wait for that little subterfuge to be trotted out again. It’s comin’ believe me because it is our fault that Limbaugh spent 3 days calling this young woman a slut and a prostitute and saying that he’d love to see the sex tape “He paid for”. Like I’ve said before, I hope he stays on the air. Best Democrat recruiting tool there is. I think the RW can officially write off the female vote for the next election cycle or two well except the women on the RW. Their husbands know how they’ll vote garsh dang it!

I won't even try to defend limbaugh. You liberals already have him tried, convicted and strung up. However, could someone explain to me why he is worse than "Bill Maher Calls Sarah Palin The ‘C-Word’ During His Stand-Up Act". http://www.mediaite.com/tv/bill-maher-calls-sarah-palin-the-c-word-during-his-stand-up-act/. How about Ed Schultz calling Laura Ingraham a ‘right wing slut’? Still somehow he was not dropped by Carbonite. Or "This is what a “big mashed up bag of meat with lipstick” looks like" re; Michelle Malkin.

I don't think you'll hear a response from the lefties on those specific issues, RLM. There's a thing called "hypocrisy" and it acts like super-glue on their lips.

My guess is that I will (or would have) heard from them. It will be that this has nothing to do with the topic and/ot I am trying to dodge the issue.

Since I don't hold talking heads like Limbaugh, Maher, et al. to very high (well, to be honest, any) standards, and am not surprised when they spew silly insults (that's part of what they get paid for after all), I'm unable to muster any outrage about this topic. Consider the source; whadaya expect? If anything, Limbaugh's BS in this instance was more apposite than the example cited above from Schultz. Limbaugh used a derogatory word relating to the sexual behavior of somebody who had spoken out about government's involvement in something of a sexual nature. Schultz used the same derogatory term as a generalized insult when Ingraham criticized President Obama; the insult wasn't even relevant to the topic.

Still, tu quoque is as worthless here as it is elsewhere. In particular: the perceived excesses of one loudmouth dingbat (or several) do not excuse those of another.

If you two think so little of our opinion before we even give it, why bother. I could give an opinion and you'd obviously dismiss it based on your comments above. Sorry, next time you want to ask something, don't dismiss potential answers in advance.

...so, lib friends, tell us again why you take Limbaugh to task for insulting a woman while cheering on the leftist who say so much worse? Would be a touch of hypocrisy? Typical.

Might be time for The Drugster to fill the L Vuitton with Viagra and head down to the Dominican Republic for a little R and R until this blows over. His aptly-named Dittoheads can make do with Sean Insanity and Mikey Weiner, aka Michael Savage, for a week or two.
