It is strange that nobody has brought up this Afghanistan massacre by a U.S. Army Soldier Robert Bales. Although massacres have long been a staple of war, it has been recognized for a long time that the longer the war go on the more likely the incidents massacres will be. Ten years of war, multiple tours of duty, and no clear mission all contribute the inevitability of situations atypical to the conduct of the vast majority of those serving honorably.
But what should we make of a situation like we have in Afghanistan? An experienced soldier snapping and massacring innocent women and children in their beds within spitting distance of a U.S. military base in the middle of the night brings back memories of other U.S. soldier massacres like the My Lia massacre in Vietnam in 1968 and the No Gun Ri Massacre in Korea in 1950. Although this country isn't associated with large scale massacres as often as many untrained military groups, we tend to bring our massacres home by failing to recognize the toll war has on individuals that have served for long periods time and that have been damaged by their service. PTSD, Gulf War Syndrome, traumatic brain injuries, suicides and any number of other mental and physical disabilities seem to be fought against by the military as if they don't exist.
So what should we think about this latest incident? Should we feel compassion for a soldier stretched to the limits of endurance or make an example of him? How do you come down on this?

It is a horrible matter and the blood of those kids are as much on Bushes and Obama's hands as the soldier who should not have been there in the first place. After 911, we should have went after Saudi Arabia and Iran if we wanted to have a real war on terrorism. Everything else is bull.

What did Iran have to do with it? As for Bush and Obama, spot on.

Terrorism is a tactic and you can no more have a war on a tactic like terrorism than you can have a war on a tactic like propaganda. Proof of this would be trying to define what a victory on a war on terrorism would look like. The second you declared a victory, the enemy would simply have to explode on bomb and your "victory" becomes a defeat. There is no such thing as a war on terrorism nor can the ideologies of either side be erased by bullets and bombs. Call it what it is, a war against radical extremists that use terror as a weapon. Unless you are willing to commit genocide, you cannot defeat an idea nor a tactic. We should never use conventional military means as a primary method of defeating an ideology or the tactics of a small group of ideologues. When we do, we end up with situations like this massacre.

    1980"s
The suicide bombing of the American embassy in Beirut (18 April. 83), which killed 61 people and left more than 120 wounded.
The suicide bombing of the Marines headquarters in Beirut (23 Oct.83), which killed 39 and wounded 40 people.
The suicide bombing of the French army barracks in Beirut (23 Oct. 83), which killed 74 and wounded about 15.

ok so the retort would be it was to get western influence out of the middle east but basically it is a relgious war that is being waged for if those troops were shia muslim they would have not been touched.

Since then they expanded to bombing jewish centers in latin america. hijacking planes and of course
    Hezbollah and Hammas.

They killed more muslims that they did not regard as muslims then jews or christians.
Just look at Syria. Syria was used by Iran to kill westerners and now Iran is helping it kill sunni for in Islam there can only be one belief and one way to have that belief.

So as far as the Middle East is concerned we just get our troops out of there and leave the locals to it, problem solved.

As for Muslim immigration to the West, fine as long as they adapt to the evolving social and religious mores of the host country. Christians already have wide latitude to practice their beliefs and express their craziness and Muslims and those of other religions should be granted no less. But certainly no more.

Tell that to Africa. Tell that to Asia. Tell that to the Greeks.
The world will be an islamic world if people do not wake up. The question is Shia or Sunni and if Sunni what type.
Now you might not think that is bad until you realize that thinking will not be allowed other then the thoughts you are told to have.

Who appointed America the guardian and protector of Asia and Africa and Greece? How about letting Africans and Asians and the Greeks take care of themselves? What the world doesn't need is more American "help".

As I have thought for the 4 years since I got back from there, the time for being in Afghanistan has long passed. Quit propping up a corrupt government and quit trying to impose something on a country that is not ready for the kind of civilization that we recognize. Afghanistan is probably decades if not centuries away from an Arab Spring type event.

And if the rats come down from the mountains and start up new camps after we leave...we can always take them out, probably from Missouri with B2's.

And yes, the guy should be punished to the fullest extent of military law.

I never knew why we sent in troops in the first place. The Special Forces and paid off tribesmen met the orginal objectives. Shoud have pulled out for that is Pakistains sphere of influence. Agreed big mistake was trying to have a presence in that part of the world. Didn't know you were there as well.

Rwanda. UN let over ten thousand people a day die by being hacked to death till toll went from 800,000 to a million. Forces stood by. America is the only true beacon of light. However, that light was not used right under Clinton and misused under Bush and Obama. But that light needs to shine and not used as an extension of saudi foregin policy.
Asia is an area we have been pulling back from since Vietnam. Tawain has been paying off the Chinese Generals for years now knowing this. Some Communist China business are already in it. The army actually has its own thing going on. Forgot the name but these days those things can be googled.
My point is Islam has been engaged in a world wide conquest since mohammad. The rise of European power and expansion delayed it but it never really stopped. The moderates know they will win the population game and time is on their side. The radicals want to just kill us all and speed up their end of days thing. But if anyone points it out they are called something or another.

What did Islam have to do with Rwanda? That was the Tutsi and the Hutu. You seem to focus on any situation from Iran to Rwanda and make these spurious connects that never existed.

It was another Nation Building thing I am sure. Which is even more laughable in Afghanistan than most other places. I can't believe we have stayed there over 10 years. What a waste.

And I was there in 2008. Even have a group photo with Karzai somewhere. Spent a couple of days putting up barriers in the hospital halls and guarding them to keep his people from killing him while he got his annual physical.

I met this guy that was part of the initial assault and found himself part of the Tora Bora siege and he radioed in that they had a group including Bin Laden cornered and he was told to stand down and do nothing. Ending the war too quickly wouldn't have allowed the war profiteers to make enough money I guess.

With everything I have read and heard, that would not surprise me at all. It was certainly one hell of a clustermug.

Of course, we are coming up on 1 year since he was killed and we are still there so they probably just could have gone ahead and killed him in 2001 and been ok.

So in your opinion what would be the final solution to the Muslim problem?

The response was to why the US needs to get involved. We did not get involved in Rwanda for no muslims were being killed. Same thing in Mexico. A nation in our own backyard where more people are being killed then in Syria.

30,000 persons are dead in a couple of years in Mexico even though Mexico, quite unlike Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Libya, Mexico is not officially engaged in armed conflicts or wars with another nation and yet, 30, 000 Mexicans are dead!"
    http://www.modernghana.com/news/331617/1/30000-mexicans-killed-in-drug-war-violence-made-in.html

Of course there is more then one variable for things to happen but if one PLO or Hamas member dies it is news whereas.......

Nope wrong side. You are seeing the voice as the problem and not the problem for what it is.
