Since freedom of speech seems pretty hot today how about this? That's right folks. Stinking Liberals are gonna kill this nation and freedom of speech is a stepping stone. No longer will folks be able to hold up a sign that says subversive, terrorist messages like I LOVE THE RED CROSS. ...unless you have a permit of course and that costs money so take the "free" out of "freedom". So you think it's going to start on a national level? Well, seems it could likely start on a state level and work it's way up. Damn Wisconsin Liberals! Ooops! I forgot! Wisconsin isn't run by liberals.
Partisan hackery aside, why do you think Wisconsinites have a law like that? Do you think there could be any valid reason? By the way, when was that law passed?
Never said it was a law so I can't say when it was passed. Sure seems to be enforced like a law though. Coincidentally in Madison. The state Capitol. As for valid reason. Youi'e big on freedom of speech Coin. You need to answer that question. Please share with the class. What would you consider a valid reason and why?
I am curious. Just what makes you think that because it is a "public place" you automatically have the right to do anything legal? Try holding that sign or even just "peaceably to assemble" in the middle of Lake Shore Drive. I will bet that will get you far quick - right to jail.
If what my eyes saw in that video is true it is...Revolting. Disgusting. Scary. I don't know how anyone could rationalize it. Justify it. Or condone it.
Freedom of speech for Coin only seems to involve radical Right-wingers producing films that insult other religions. I may think that all religions are equally stupid and I know that I have the right to make a movie, a statement, or any type of public pronouncement saying exactly that, but I choose to be reasonable and not try to piss people off around the world with my views (except for you guys, then it gets fun). There is no way I'd publish an Op-Ed in a widely read newspaper condemning Christians, Jews, Muslims, or any other belief system no matter what I really think. Freedom of speech isn't the freedom act stupidly. It comes with responsibility and should not be used as a weapon to insult those elements that that are just as crazy as those people that choose to use free speech as a weapon. Tolerance goes hand-in-hand with free speech. If you choose to intolerant of others beliefs you really can't expect them to be tolerant of your freedom of speech. One point that is lost on the Right is that when people in Egypt for example or any country that doesn't practice freedom of speech, see some American produced film that offends them, the really believe that it was completely sanctioned by the U.S. Government because they can't imagine what it is like to live in a country that isn't completely censored by the government. That type of cultural difference is exactly why we have to be aware of the limits of our freedom of speech and the intolerance that can be convey unintentionally and attributed to all Americans much in the same way many attribute the violence in the Middle East to all Muslims. I guess the lesson here is practice freedom of speech but use your head too.
No, I believe YOUR lesson is "don't practice freedom of speech if there's a possibility it might offend someone" (unless, of course, YOU are practicing it to offend someone on this forum then you seem to think it's OK). Let's see... there's a word to describe your behavior... Ah, yes: hypocritical |ˌhipəˈkritikəl| adjective behaving in a way that suggests one has higher standards or more noble beliefs than is the case: we don't go to church and we thought it would be hypocritical to have him christened. it would be entirely hypocritical of me to say I regret it, because I don't. DERIVATIVES hypocritically |ˌhipəˈkritik(ə)lē|adverb
I know that there were a lot of words there and that must have frustrated you greatly but I expected that you wouldn't comprehend anyway. Not black and white enough for you perhaps? Oh seriously, who cares what your opinion is?
