White House Blocks CNN, NY Times, Politico, LA Times, Others From Press Briefing

    Variety

Several major news outlets found themselves blocked from attending a Friday White House press briefing with Sean Spicer, the Press Secretary, the latest sign of worsening relations between the Trump administration and the media attempting to cover it.

The New York Times, CNN, the Los Angeles Times and Politico were among the news organizations prevented from attending, according to posts by reporters from those outlets on Twitter, as were several foreign news organizations. The Associated Press and Time declined to take part. The White House was said to have invited press organizations to the event.

The three major broadcast networks – CBS, ABC, and NBC – were invited to the briefing, as were several news outlets that play to a conservative readership, such as Breitbart, The Washington Times and One America News Network.

Felony Charges for Journalists Arrested at Inauguration Protests Raise Fears for Press Freedom

    By JONAH ENGEL BROMWICH
    January 25, 2017

    The New York Times

At least six journalists were charged with felony rioting after they were arrested while covering the violent protests that took place just blocks from President Trump’s inauguration parade in Washington on Friday, according to police reports and court documents.

The journalists were among 230 people detained in the anti-Trump demonstrations, during which protesters smashed the glass of commercial buildings and lit a limousine on fire.

The charges against the journalists — Evan Engel, Alexander Rubinstein, Jack Keller, Matthew Hopard, Shay Horse and Aaron Cantu — have been denounced by organizations dedicated to press freedom. All of those arrested have denied participating in the violence.

“These felony charges are bizarre and essentially unheard of when it comes to journalists here in America who were simply doing their job,” said Suzanne Nossel, the executive director of Pen America. “They weren’t even in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were in the right place.”

Journalist faces charges after arrest while covering Dakota Access pipeline protest

    By Sandy Tolan
    February 5, 2017
    Los Angeles Times

A journalist arrested in a broad sweep of a “rogue” protest camp near the Standing Rock reservation is facing criminal charges from North Dakota authorities.

Jenni Monet, 40, on assignment for Indian Country Today and the Center for Investigative Reporting, has been arrested and charged with criminal trespass and “engaging in a riot” by Morton County prosecutors. She was arrested Wednesday and released on bond late Thursday.

Monet was arrested as authorities rounded up about 75 “water protectors” attempting to set up a new protest camp on private land near the Cannonball River. Police moved in Wednesday afternoon to prevent the establishment of the “Last Child Camp,” locking down the area with highway barricades.

Monet said she was there to document the story. She said she scaled a hill above the river, where dozens of opponents of the Dakota Access pipeline had erected tepees and stood, arms locked, facing police.

Police “asked me to leave,” and she attempted to do so, Monet said in an interview Friday. “I was walking away, I was halfway down the hill, and they still arrested me,” she said.

She added that she had been observing the protesters from a distance, “clearly removed from the arrests,” and had already identified herself as a journalist on assignment. As the arresting officer fumbled with the zip ties on Monet’s hands, she recalls telling him, “Well, you could just not arrest me, because I’m a journalist.”

The arresting officer did not read Monet her Miranda rights, she said. She was loaded onto a school bus and held for seven hours with other women, “stripped down to our long johns,” in metal cages in a Morton County jail parking garage. Late Wednesday evening, Monet was transferred to an indoor cell with five other women.

. . . and I'm sure the remaining 224 who were arrested also denied participating in the violence, no?

I never realized freedom of the LIBERAL press included immunity from prosecution when you violate all laws.

    I'll repeat:
    What was their crime?

They asked her to leave, she tried to and they arrested her anyway.

The 1st Amendment is being violated, and the good comrades here applaud.

Applauding, no. Taking a cynical view . . . yes, considering the source.

My guess is that, as seems the norm with leftist "journalists", we've only got part of the story. I'd lay money that she went partway down the hill to avoid arrest, and then turned to face the action from a distance she thought was safe, and continued to record her story . . . still trespassing, of course.

I think I understand human nature pretty darned well, and cannot envision this incident transpiring any differently.

By the way, YOU are the socialist, Comrade . . .

    Felony rioting!
That is what happens when you refuse a lawful order to leave the area.

    It's no coincidence that....

In the 1930s, Adolf Hitler arrested and executed ‘fake news’ journalists who rightfully claimed that Jews were being exterminated

Who in the world are you trying to draw a parallel to, Joe? POTUS Trump has done no more to filter the media bias than did Obama during his own tenure in the White House.

    BTW, remember this?

The FBI sought and obtained a warrant to seize all of Rosen's correspondence with Kim, and an additional two days' worth of Rosen's personal email, the Post reported. The bureau also obtained Rosen's phone records and used security badge records to track his movements to and from the State Department.

Fox News issued a sharply worded statement on Monday calling the episode "downright chilling".

"We are outraged to learn today that James Rosen was named a criminal co-conspirator for simply doing his job as a reporter," Fox News executive vice-president of news editorial Michael Clemente said in the statement. "In fact, it is downright chilling. We will unequivocally defend his right to operate as a member of what up until now has always been a free press."

It's pretty darned easy to compare Hitler to Hitler, don't you think.

Is anything more than that too much of a challenge for you?
