I hear the enlightenment was founded on the backs of various fairy tales as interpreted by Descartes and Thomas Aquinas.

I don't think one can simplify atheism as you have although you're getting warmer let's say. I suppose atheism is a "religion" but not like all others. The lack of a deity is a major difference. I will gladly admit that my values are based upon Jewish/Christian/(not sure about Western) values. Actually it was not until a few years ago that I declared myself as Atheist. The horrible things I have seen done and said by "good Christians" is a major reason why. I reckon I'll post a thread about this so we can all hash it out.
I use to be Catholic. At age 16-17 I started looking closely and I asked myself "Do I want to be associated with the Crusades and Spanish Inquisition?" Hell NO! I left kicking and screaming. Later on, I started to appreciate some of the scholars like Aquinas who was called before the Inquisition twice and the beginning of the Age of Reason. I still ask myself who's the screw up, God or Man. So I definitely understand how religion can lead towards Atheism.
Religion is a tool. Like a scythe, it can harvest food to sustain life or it can be used as a weapon to take life. It depends on the person wielding it. I've met equally repugnant Christians and Atheists. Again, it depends on the individual. If I profess to be a Christian and go out and do very unchristian things, is it the fault of Christianity or is it my fault? A valid argument can be made both ways. How is anyone able to put their faith in something so situational, so individual dependent? You can't, or if you do, you do it at your own peril. Look at Catholic priests. They speak of God's love and abuse innocent children by the thousands and their leadership covers for them and hides their crimes for the sake of the church. Their response was generally to wear their own fallibility as a badge of honor as if committing these acts just proved everything they have been teaching all along. Ye-ah! I was raised in a Catholic school. I watched them introduce religion to young minds in the day and gambling to their parents at night. This is only one example of the rot that these religious hypocrites are steeped in. It goes much, much deeper. I personally don't care what people let themselves get sucked into. That is their problem. "A fool and his money..." and all. But don't you dare try to take these religious clowns and spread that hypocrisy to my government. The government already has enough hypocrisy of it's own.
