'Just overturned the will of the people': Mississippi Supreme Court strikes down medical marijuana law In November 2020, voters in deeply Republican Mississippi approved Initiative 65 — a ballot measure that would have put a right to medical marijuana in the state's constitution. But Initiative 65 has been struck down by the Mississippi Supreme Court. Explaining their ruling, the justices wrote, "We grant the petition, reverse the secretary of state's certification Initiative 65, and hold that any subsequent proceedings on it are void." Ken Newburger, executive director for the Mississippi Medical Marijuana Association, was quick to decry the Mississippi Supreme Court's decision. WLBT, the NBC affiliate in Jackson, Mississippi, quotes Newburger as saying, "The Mississippi Supreme Court just overturned the will of the people of Mississippi. Patients will now continue the suffering that so many Mississippians voted to end." On the Raw Story Podcast: Marcus Flowers Marjorie Taylor Green's worst nightmare WLBT reporters Sharie Nicole and Courtney Ann Jackson note that the Mississippi Senate "passed a back-up measure" in case the Mississippi Supreme Court struck down Initiative 65. Mississippi Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann, in an official statement, said, "The Senate passed backstop legislation which we anticipate revisiting in January." And Mississippi State Sen. Brice Wiggins, a Republican, said, "This is why we did stay up past midnight having the debate. We went back and forth because we, the Senate, were trying to provide a program that clearly the people of Mississippi want." I'm not sure about that. Recreational cannabis has been legal in my state for over a year and a half and I have yet to read one single problem with the new law. I suppose there might be some idiot that got high and drove his car into a ditch or something but as far as mass societal problems go, haven't really noticed any. We are raking in millions and millions of dollars annually in taxes from the sale of cannabis. Neighboring states are seeing their cannabis money go straight into our state's coffers. That would be their problem.
Do people often refer to you as Debbie Downer? You seem to have a very negative view of just about everything.
Correct! With your complete confidence that there are those that are "unwilling to work" and that they are sucking away your and every Americans hard earned tax dollars, do you even have a concrete estimate or Bureau of Labor Statistics number to support your beliefs or is it more likely that you are simply relying on your own biases as the only proof you need? I'm serious! I'm willing to believe you if you can show me some hard numbers on folks that fit your opinions and how they are sucking tax money away from the rest of us?
It's always the hard numbers and facts that will stop any type of conversation with a hard Right winger. They don't deal in facts, just emotions, prejudices, and anecdotes.
I believe I live in one of those neighboring state that being Indiana where for years we saw tons of money stream over the border into Illinois (just to name one state) because you couldn't buy alcohol on Sunday. Now it's marijuana. Not long ago I asked my endocrinologist if he would prescribe marijuana were it legal in Indiana. He didn't say yes or no. just smiled as did my cardiologist. It has been shown to be effective in helping with neuropathy pain which I suffer from very badly at times. I take Gabapentin three times a day as it is and sometimes it's not enough. Did I learn this in High Times? No, in the AARP magazine that I get. Have I travelled to Illinois to buy any form of marijuana? No. Have I ever used it recreationally? Absolutely. Do I want to now? No. I don't drink nor do I use any drugs for recreation. Hell, I take enough as doctor ordered as it is. Have I used it recently? Yes (and I broke the law doing so). My feet were really doing a number one day. My neighbor has a similar problem. She gave me some gummis that her son bought her in Illinois. She's 65 and has never used marihuana recreationally. I ate half of one and laid down with my feet up. It was a definite help. After awhile I was able to take a nice nap and awoke feeling much better. I've repeated this a few times in the past few months. It helps. I don't do it to get high but I could. Marijuana can actually be used for something. Can alcohol?
