They're still "rarer" than live birth. To move back to the point here, it's not my goal to make them "rare", however you choose to define it. It's my goal to make them available to those that need them.

I don't believe you when you go down this line of reasoning. If you truly believed it was taking a life you wouldn't support abortion in rape/incest exceptions.

I don't like that a choice must be made in the grey area where either the mother or the baby must give something up despite having done no wrong. When raped and impregnated, the life of the woman is irreversibly altered without her permission. That her life is so affected without her choice weighs heavily on me. Maybe the solution for rape should be to carry to term and put the child up for adoption. I admittedly wrestle with this issue.

For incest, I still feel abortion is on the table because of the increased likelihood that birth defects may arise if the fetus is carried to term.

When a woman / girl gets impregnated recreationally however, she's already exercised her right to pursue happiness, brief though it may have been.

If a woman / girl is impregnated involuntarily, as in the cases of rape and incest, she has been deprived the right to choose. Not so for those who would elect abortion as birth control of recreational pregnancies . . . They have already made their choice.

I draw the lines where I do because of the distinction between circumstances.

 

I appreciate your clarification, I understand it's a difficult issue to grapple with.

Some thoughts on it:

1. I've always thought of incest as precluding rape (since it's already specified). Gross as it is, consensual incest is a thing. I obviously don't feel those are the type of people to raise children, but does that perspective change your thoughts on it?

2. We can tell pretty early on now if there will be birth defects and some people know that they are predisposed to passing on genetic issues. Should abortion be allowed in those cases? For the record, the odds of birth defects and issues with incest are overstated due to the taboo. On a genetic probability level, you don't really start seeing issues for a couple generations in a row of incest.

3. I'm guessing we'll just have to agree to disagree on this issue overall, it's not worth belaboring (as you've already said in this thread)

 

I hadn't really considered cases of consensual incest, but I would deem those recreational pregnancies, and not involuntary. My thoughts remain the same otherwise.
