Must she really have all her years of hard work thrown down the drain because she used a term that she obviously had no idea of its connotations? The irony is, this champion for civil rights, Al Sharpton, is nothing but a sickening racist. Whom is is the business of self promotion through the decimation of good, well meaning white people. I blame CNN. I blame FOX. I blame MSNBC. For giving this dark skinned David Duke prot?g? a platform.
People never cease to amaze me with their stupidity. How hard is it to watch what you say on national television. I do however agree with Jhony5 about Al Sharpton.
She obviously thought "lynching" was only equal to "jumping" or "beating up". IT was a joke. She obviously made an innocent mistake. My issue is this phenomenon of allowing racists like Sharpton to lynch white peoples careers for simple misunderstandings. Lynch: to put to death (as by hanging) by mob action without legal sanction. The term isn't actually racist. White people have been lynched to. This whole thing is ridiculous. It is a device of the American psyche to create racial connotations within this word. Taking into account the true definition of the word "lynch", can we not say honestly that she has nothing to apologize for. What needs to happen is these people that keep getting lynched by Sharpton need to stop apologizing, and start publicly telling Sharpton to go to hell and burn.
I do believe you are probably right about her innocence in making the comment, and good points on lynching. Maybe the networks should outlaw all jokes for Al Sharpton's sake
Some great points Jhony, I am sure she did not really intend to say he should be hanged, so many times words have several meanings depending how their used. In this case, she clearly was joking, I have no idea why people cannot be allowed to be light hearted and joke about anything as long as it is in this mannor. Intent should be the defining factor, not any one specific word that slips during a program. As far as the Sharptons and jackons of the world, they can care less about race problems themselves, they sit back like sharpshooter waiting on their chance to pounce on situation they can twist into a "racist" onw and gain power from it. Most of the time, these guys go to a place, cause all sorts of unrest, and leave the mess behind to chase the next available publicity stunt. If there racist issues still in America? Yes, but I believe it is not anywhere as big as is claimed, and it is guys like Sharption that keep stuff stirred up and does not allow people to chill out.
I'd say the fact that crap like Imus and this Golf lady thing speaks volumes toward the current state of civil rights in America. If these sort of things are being made into such a big deal, I suggest that means civil rights is in good shape if we have time to worry about ugly jokes (Imus) and our cultures assumptions about the word "Lynch". The most insidious element I am witnessing is the career choice of reverse racism pimp, ala Al Sharpton.
I completely agree that Sharpton and Jackson need to get a life a quit living off the slip ups of others. How come when issues like the Tawana Bawley incident and the Duke LaCross teams happen, and their public character assassinations destroy the reputation of innocent people accused of racial crimes by African Americans, they never go public and apologize for their actions. I do however think that the person should get some sort of mild reprimand from the Golf Channel, but that along with an apology should be the end of it. With that said. The origin of the term "Lynching", is racial. The difference is, that it has morphed to be perceived as a mob justice comment not a racial comment. Kind of how thousands of other sayings can be traced back decades and centuries to a specific meaning. Take the, "Ring around the rosie", little kids rhyme. You described the origination of the term "Lynch", but the act itself has gone on for all time. The misbegotten golf channel anchor used it in the conventional wild west context. Even Tiger Woods, a friend of hers, completely dismissed any thoughts of racism in this case. People use the term all the time. The real issue is that whites are not allowed to make jokes about blacks. If they do, there is always a way to make it seem racial. Lynching is not a racial term. It may have been 300 years ago. But not in todays world. Fact is, Whites, Asians, Mexicans, Italians have all been victims of lynch mobs all throughout American history. Blacks don't own the word as their own.

Sad thing is, if I remember right, Jesse Jackson was on that balcony too. My former father-in-law, had a bit of racism to him. I mean the guy worked as a tool and die machinist and in his tool box up until he retired last November, had a George Wallace For President button, in his tool chest, at work. Every year, when it came around to Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday, which he referred to as, Black Monday, would say that they should have shot four more so we could have the whole week off. I made sure he didn't say this stuff around my kids.
