(CNN) -- Osama bin Laden stresses the importance of martyrdom for Muslim causes in a videotape that purportedly contains a 50-second message from the al Qaeda leader.



Osama bin Laden appears on videotape saying that martyrdom is a worthy goal for every Muslim.

The 40-minute videotape, whose audio was being translated from Arabic by CNN, was intercepted before it was to appear on several Islamist Web sites known for carrying statements from al Qaeda and other radical groups.

The videotape, titled "A Special Surprise from As-Sahab. Heaven's Breeze Part I," was made in the last four weeks, but the clips appear to be old, said Octavia Nasr, CNN's senior editor for Arab affairs. There is no indication of where it was shot, and CNN cannot verify its authenticity.

'Saudi Arabia is the biggest source of foreign jihadis in Iraq'

SILICON VALLEY: Although Washington has been accusing Syria and Iran of helping insurgents in Iraq, it is the US ally Saudi Arabia which is the largest source of foreign insurgents in Iraq, a media report has said.

About 45 per cent of all foreign militants targeting US troops and Iraqi civilians and security forces are from Saudi Arabia, compared to 15 per cent from Syria and Lebanon; and 10 per cent from North Africa, according to official military figures made available to The Los Angeles Times by a senior US military officer.

Nearly half of the 135 foreigners in US detention facilities in Iraq are Saudis. Fighters from Saudi Arabia are thought to have carried out more suicide bombings than those of any other nationality, said the officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the subject's sensitivity.

This has left the US military in the awkward position of battling an enemy whose top source of foreign fighters is a key ally that at best has not been able to prevent its citizens from undertaking bloody attacks in Iraq, the paper said.

Fifty per cent of all Saudi fighters in Iraq come as suicide bombers, the source told the newspaper adding suicide bombings have killed or injured 4,000 Iraqis in the last six months.

ROME—Police on Saturday arrested three Moroccans—a Muslim imam and two of his aides—and accused them of running a "terror school" at a small mosque in central Italy, where they allegedly trained in combat, learned about bombs and stashed away chemicals.

Italian anti-terror police said they found barrels of chemicals and instructions on how to pilot a Boeing 747 in the Ponte Felcino mosque on the outskirts of Perugia, a city known for its Renaissance architecture and idyllic countryside. A fourth suspect was being sought.

"The investigation has shown that, in the Ponte Felcino mosque, there was a continued training for terrorist activity," anti-terror police head Carlo De Stefano said. "We have discovered and neutralized a real 'terror school,' which was part of a widespread terrorism system made up of small cells that act on their own."

Police identified the imam as 41-year-old Korchi El Mostapha, and his two aides as Mohamed El Jari, 47, and Driss Safika, 46. A fourth Moroccan suspect was believed to be abroad. All four were suspected of conducting training with the aim of international terrorism.

Egypt Police Hands Over Christian Convert To "Fanatical Muslim" Family

Egyptian police in the city of Alexandria who last week arrested a Christian convert, handed the woman over Monday, July 23, to her fanatical Islamist family, who beat her before driving her away, a well-informed Christian news agency reported.

Compass Direct News quoted eyewitnesses as saying that family members of Shaymaa (Eman) Muhammad al-Sayed, 26, "dragged her screaming from the Bab-Sharky police station where she had been" held in custody.

After "severely beating her" in the Shatby Cemetery behind the police station at 4 p.m. local time, she was then forced into a family microbus and driven away, eyewitnesses reportedly said.

One week ago, on July 16, the same family members openly threatened to kill Al-Sayed for leaving Islam to become a Christian, after spotting her walking through a fair in Alexandria, Compass Direct News added.

POLICE TORTURE

Local police reportedly took her into "protective custody," but instead police and State Security Investigation (SSI) officials subjected her to days of "severe physical and emotional torture," the news agency said.

Her maltreatment allegedly included electrical shocks, beatings and being photographed naked. Her repeated requests to press charges against her family for attempting to kidnap and kill her were ignored.

In published remarks, Egyptian convert Rasha Noor said she wasn't surprised about the police treatment.

"The Christians from a Muslim background can’t change their identities, so they are always pushed by the authorities to return back to Islam – or else."
