Haven't you come to the conclusion that your little avatar is a bit out of place and crass in light of recent events...Of course you haven't. :(

Maybe it's the reality of the situation and I'm just facing it.

Handguns should be legal. Long waiting period should be enacted. Only citizens having the right to bear arms should be followed. Psychological background checks should be allowed to be part of the waiting period process. Parents held legally responsible for unlocked handguns in the house should be enforced. It really is a common sense issue with alot of middle ground to be worked out.

Handguns have one and only one purpose, against other people. Whether it is to criminally act against someone or it is to defend yourself against someone else with a handgun, handguns are people killers. Rifles and shotguns are primarily for hunting and sport and sometimes are used in the commission of a crime. The size, shape, and ease of use of a handgun make it the perfect weapon to take a fellow humanbeing's life with. They have been a part of our American culture since before the days of the wild west. We perfected them into lethal killing devices with our American ingenuity and innovation. Everywhere handguns proliferate, you find murder, death and victimization of the innocent. It is first a weapon of aggression and then to a lesser degree a defensive tool. As a defensive tool, it is usually in response to the perception that others are similarly armed thus spawning and reproducing itself within a particular population. Defense or offense, this weapon is always accompanied by more and more death when introduced into a society. All the laws in the world can't prevent someone from shooting someone if they have the means and the desire to do so...handguns just take the time between the decision to do so and the act and reduce it.

What political BS? If you want, I suppose I could wait until the next mass shooting. Would it be O.K. then? How about the next one, or the next one, or the next one, or the next one...

    Just let me know please.

Who are you to decide for me....

If you don't want a handgun or the right have one or ability to protect your family in case of certian events, thats fine with me, its your house... I can respect that...

    But not in mine...

I own handguns for more than self defense... I collect them, not unlike you collecting coins and I also enjoy the sport of target shooting with a pistol...

I shoot in competitions... I've shot IDPA and IPSC courses and I really enjoy it... Its a lot more of a challenge than hunting or target shooting with a rifle or a shotgun...

I guess we will agree to disagree...

    Also, I have to ask..

In the event that some crazed nutbag was to break into your house and try and do you or your family harm (I seriously hope this never happens no mater how much we disagree on some things) how would you re-act???

What do you do for home defense???

What do you do in a natrual disaster like Katrina when the Nutbags are out looting and Raping, because they can....

Well, I guess I figure that the risks of having a weapon in the house are greater than either of those two events ever happening. Looting and raping are highly unlikely in actual disasters just like the false reasons people give for buying a cell phone. In case the car breaks down, probably the most over used excuse for needing a cell phone offered as justification for owning one. In my opinion, people rarely do things for the right reasons.

But, if somebody does break into my house, I have a large protective dog and if she fails, I am still 6'-3" weighing in at 250 lbs. and capable of taking care of myself. I think handguns are owned for many reasons that have very little to do with the reality of the situation. Nobody ever talks about the rush you get while holding the weapon in your hand. Nobody ever talks about the enhanced self-confidence one gets from holding a weapon. Nobody talks about the feeling of invinciblity. All those things are true but not discussed.
I just don't happen to need those character enhancements.

Your situation may be completely different than mine and you may have a need for protection. I can't speak to that but if you thought about how much you've actually been saved by owning a handgun, you probably can't come up with one instance.

You said it Moen "desire". I think thats the most important word. As long as people have the desire to harm others they will find a way to do so, somehow. Unless of course the government takes controlling us to the point of mind control, chips in the brain or something like that.
