What would be a good topic to write on current world events?

I need suggestions on current world events (not an event that happened in the U.S. or primarily affects the U.S.). I need to write an essay that explains how the study of history facilitates an understanding of world events and how it helps to shape well-informed global citizens and explain how an understanding of history deepens an understanding of that event.

 

First...start somewhere other than the US to look for well informed citizens. No need to study history here either. It will all be repeated over and over.

 

Try doing a piece on how the Brazilian economy is doing since the large oil discoveries hit the news

 

That question has a lot of depth that I doubt that I could give an excellent topic for. I would probably write about the opening up of the Northwest Passage that has only happened in very recent times and what are the implications of the three oceans mixing? Three oceans meaning the Atlantic, Artic and Pacific.
