I want to get started in metal detecting, although I cannot afford to purchase a decent one right now.. but still like to get into it before the summer is over, was thinking of building my own but id still need to purchase the items.. So was looking around for just cheap ones that be better & not much more.. found this one here, seems to be the best I have found locally so far for $60cnd. http://www.thesourcecc.com/estore/P...line&category=Metal Detectors&product=6303005 any one know of a better cheap detector? have to buy/order locally, Ont/Can any advice/rec be great thanks
That's not exactly cheap, guess ya miss read, take off a 0 looking for around the $50-60 CND as my budget range.. May be able to adjust slightly if can get a fair bit better one for just a lil over. that one above is the top end of my budget already, I know its not great and wont find much around that price, but I am hoping there are still others to choose from within that range. And im sure it still be better then a home made BFO.
Just remember cheap detectors only find cheap metal!!!! Anything under $100 is really a waste of your hard earned money. They will work, but not very acurate and dependable and don't go very deep. You'll spend almost all your time just diggin up trash. The best advise is to wait until you have enough money to get a better detector. I researched detectors for about 6 months and visited every forum out there to help me make my decision. Everywhere I went they all seemed to agree that for the money, an inexpensive little "hard-worker" that gave consistently good results was the ACE-250 by Garrett. It is more than what you want to spend but at a rather inexpensive $199 +/- it would be well worth the extra $. I even read of users that had $500+ detectors, getting this one in addition because it just works so good and is easy to operate.
... I'm sorry Avoozl , I thought that the ' c ' in cnd. was a 0 , so I thought that you were looking for metal detectors in the $600s , btw I did not read the whole post , I just saw the number and a couple more things and posted something . I can't understand why so many people buy the ACE 250 from Garrett , you can get a better metal detector for 200 dollars . I mean I've known so many people asking about info. about the Ace250 and people that bought that metal detector , etc. , I just can't believe it . Sincerely , Porsche2007
Thanks, when I get a better one next year defiantly keep that ACE-250 in mind. Would be either the cheap one now or none till next summer some time. Which is why I was considering it or making my own just to get into the sport/hobby also get some exercise Be cheap way to see if I really get into it as well. Maybe possible to return the item to the shop as well if it really is just crap, something have to look into first when you say they only pick up cheap metals, does that mean they really only find junk or basically pick up all metals resulting in more digging?.. which is something I was expecting with a cheap one, but I figured they would also have np detecting the good stuff as well. aprox what depth you think it would have? unfortunately this one don't say noticed the better ones do 6-9" or 2f for large items unfortunately that one there doesn't give much info (never good thing) still searching to find out more on it.. does say it shows the type of metal its detecting & sensitivity controller.. but don't how well they work
Sorry Avoozl, that was just a "cheap metal" joke. From experience, I purchased a $50 detector from Radio Shack and it couldn't even find my property stakes. I think the difference between the more expensive and the cheaper units is the descrimination and the depth. They will all show you metal objects. I was once asked, and I always remembered it,"do you want to spend the whole day and find lots of foil, pop-tabs and a few coins or do you want to spend the whole day and find lots of coins and a few pop-tabs?" My detector tells me (pretty accurately) what I have located ($1, 50c, 25c, 10c, 1c, buckle, bullet, gold, silver, etc.) and how deep it is located. It also pinpoints the exact location to save a lot of unnecessary digging. I do not know a lot about the ACE-250 but I have been told and have read many times that it is a VERY good detector that runs side-by-side with many, more expensive detectors.
Thanks for the info guys.. When it comes time to buy next week will decide whether to get that cheap one to mess around & get me out of the wife's hair for a few hours or just hold off and get started next year with a better one. either way be defiantly getting a better one next year
If u want 2 spend ALL ur time digging and NO finding, buy a cheap one! If you want 2 find coin's buy a White or one of the better models. I got a White XLT $1100.00 and it is not easy finding the "real" stuff with it. btw....Good Luck
