I'd say there's a lot of similarities between Carter and Obama. The only one big difference I can recall is that Obama only lost one of the helicopters, Carter lost them all. OTOH, the economy is probably worse now than under Carter. I think you'd have to go back to Hoover to find a President who did worse with the economy.

 It's not like Obama was handed a thriving economy... then I could agree with someone saying he messed it up. But the economy was in a massive free-fall when he took the oath... you really have to factor that in...

I believe that much of what has been said above was also said about the Japanese back in the 1970s and '80s. Didn't they own Rockefeller Center at one point? And they were certainly kicking the American car industry's ass weren't they? America seems to have survived. More or less.

It's also worth pointing out that when American firms chose to export jobs they are also exporting technology along with them. Boeing, for example, is doing a wonderful job of providing commercial aircraft technology and hands-on experience in design and manufacture to potential competitors as it creates the 787.

Finally, I do agree with Clembo that in their relentless demand for lower prices above all else American consumers have shot themselves in the foot. I'd also argue that American corporations know exactly what they are getting from their foreign subcontractors and it's probably in part the result of pushing the subs to the wall when it comes to profit margins.
