L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling, whom commentators have tried to tie to the Republican Party after his alleged racist statements, is in fact a Democrat, according to campaign contribution records.

Sterling is in hot water after TMZ released recordings purporting to be a weird psychosexual rant he directed at girlfriend V. Stiviano, accusing her of publicly associating with black people. The highly offensive comments have drawn condemnation from across the National Basketball Association as well as from many other sources; and inevitably, attempts have been made to link him to the Republican Party. These appear to be based on campaign contribution records for a different Sterling, who lives in the state of Texas. Clippers owner Donald Sterling lives in Beverly Hills, has a long history of bigoted behavior in his Los Angeles business dealings, and according to a 2011 RealGM report, was a very occasional Democratic donor in the 1990s:

    Donald Sterling, Los Angeles Clippers
Records show Sterling has donated just $6,000, with no activity since the early 1990s. He supported Gray Davis early in his career, as well as Bill Bradley.

Bradley was a Hall of Fame forward for the New York Knicks before becoming a U.S. senator from New Jersey and an unsuccessful presidential candidate. Davis made out with Cybill Shepherd in the 1960s before becoming California’s 37th governor and the first Golden State executive ever to be recalled.

At the American Power blog, Donald Douglas has an extended discussion of Sterling’s donations to liberal causes and the left-leaning commentators who have lauded him in the past. At the time TMZ released its recording, Sterling was scheduled to receive a lifetime achievement award from the NAACP.

Presuming the recordings are authentic, Sterling’s fixations appear to be strangely selective. At one point he fumes about Stiviano’s associating with Magic Johnson, not on the grounds that Magic is a former Laker but because Sterling believes she is publicizing her friendship with the beloved Los Angeles icon:

“[A]dmire him — bring him here, feed him, f–k him, I don’t care. You can do anything. But don’t put him on an Instagram for the world to see so they have to call me. And don’t bring him to my games.”

In another section Sterling reiterates that he is untroubled by the prospect of Stiviano’s sleeping with black men — an ancient point of agitation for white racists — but doesn’t want her to post pictures of blacks on Instagram:

“You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on that … and not to bring them to my games.”

Sterling made his fortune as a divorce and personal injury lawyer and Southern California real estate developer. He is reported to be worth $1.9 billion.

Good. I'm glad it came out. Always nice when the facade is ripped off a Democrat. It should have happened much earlier since there appears to be no shortage of evidence pointing to what he is. His views need to be condemned by all good people and this seems to be what's happening. He sounds like a guy the Baggers could endorse though. Man needs to get with his own kind, politically. He and Bundy need to talk.

What happened was that I started including in my criticism someone you see as being in your camp. To me, one racist is as objectionable as another. Doesn't matter who they give money to.

Having read up on Sterling, it's clear to me that he is a racist a**hole who deserves exposure and condemnation. So is and does Bundy.

Partially I haven't come down on this guy much because his comments were not intended to be public. But he was in a public venue and probably has a big mouth. TMZ isn't known for protecting people's privacy. I think the guy is a stone cold bigot and probably hurt himself with his big mouth more than anyone else. But if he was a bright dude in the first place, he wouldn't be a bigot.

    In my camp? Hardly.

    No disagreement here.

He's one of those old-time racists who probably hasn't received the benefit of a PC-inspired educational system. That's not an excuse, but merely an observation as to why he might be so racist.

That was the oddest conversation I have ever heard. An 80 year old White guy doesn't even know his 20 year old girlfriend is Black/Hispanic but tells her she can F all the Black guys she wants to but just don't put up photos of them on Instagram or bring them to games so his crony friends will stop making fun of him. Yeesh.

The saddest thing to me is that those two teams took the court and played a game after this. They should have stood up for something and refused to at least play that one game. Force the issue. Take a stand. Something more than turning your shirts inside out. Double Yeesh.

What do Bundy and Sterling have in common? I think it is worth noting that they are both fairly well off, they are both about 80, they are both white, they are both men, and the are both bigoted a-holes.

What can we take from that? Let's see, wealthy, white, old, male. Sound like any other demographic you can name? Hum? Perhaps these dinosaurs and their backwards attitudes need to just go away. We are a multicultural society like it or not and there is no room for people that still live like they exist in the 1800's.

I think it is pretty much a given that those who were adults before the civil rights movement are probably going to have higher levels of racism as a group than those born after. And it probably gets higher the further back you go.

And, yes, I imagine the rich do tend to isolate themselves from others, especially minorities, by living in gated communities and mansions, heavy isolation of races in big cities, high priced restaurants, exclusive clubs, etc.

With this guy, I bet he doesn't believe he is racist at all. He may even hold many minorities in high regard...as long as they stay in their world and he can stay in his world. And his world is one where his girlfriend doesn't associate with them in public where his crony friends will see it and get on him about it.

In other words, he is a byproduct of the institutionalized segregation he grew up with for probably the first thirty years of his life and the cultural segregation he has lived in for the last 50.

Well, well... Turns out that the universe isn't going haywire. In spite of the Right wing's attempt to call Sterling a Democrat for donating to a couple of Democrats in the early '90's to the tune of $6,000 total and thus tainting all Democrats as racists, turns out that Sterling has been a registered Republican for 25 years.

A search of The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder's website using Sterling's name, date of birth, and address turns up a Republican registration, and the registrar-recorder's office confirmed the information to TPM on Monday.
I wonder if the same people that used Sterling's supposed political affiliation to taint all Democrats will now use his real political affiliation to taint all Republicans?
Of course not! They haven't anywhere near that much character. :p

A RINO who donates cash in order to elect Democrats does not a Republican make.

Over 20 years ago? Seriously? Donating 6K does not make a registered Republican a Democrat. I guess your tune suddenly changed.

In light of this guy's history, I wonder why the NAACP was preparing to honor him with an award? Hmmm.
