So, it looks like a lifetime ban & $2.5 million fine. I think they let him off too easy. Shoulda let the players opt out of their contracts & allow the fans to get refunds on their tickets. Advertisers are already bailing on him. Wouldn't be long until the franchise had no value!
I said he was a Democrat CONTRIBUTOR. That's the absolute truth. He certainly doesn't contribute money to the Republicans! My guess is that, like so many others, he is registered with a certain party in order to be able vote in primaries. Anyway, the Republicans need to get racists like Mr. Sterling registered with the party that shares their ideals and who will gladly take their money... the Democrats. I wonder if any more Democrats will take his money now that his racist views are known? Probably, but they'll still call him a "cracker" at the same time.
I gotta say that KAJ pretty much wrote everything I thought about this 'scandal'. http://time.com/#79590/donald-sterling-kareem-abdul-jabbar-racism/
It's a tough call if you think about it David. Although the players would most likely be able to continue with their lucrative careers, what about the vendors etc.? These are the people that really depend on him I would think. Destroying a team because of his actions is one hell of a "trickle down" theory.
I guess this issue does give credence to the trickle-down theory, doesn't it? But as far as the vendors, etc, that bell has already been rung.
When it comes to sports, sports venues and surrounding businesses the "trickle down" theory does play into the overall equation. I won't argue that as, after all, I brought it up. A store that sells NBA and LA Clipper memorabilia near the stadium has made a decision to do so, for example. It is their livelihood. If the team sucks the profits go down. If they're in the playoffs (as they are now) profits are most likely up. They depend on the team. It is their risk. Hence the "trickle down". On the other hand, if you truly believe in "trickle down" this makes no sense at all... Advertisers can bail on him of their own choice and it seems they are. I figure they'll come back when he's gone. Like him or not Sterling still owns the team. IF he sells at this point he'll most likely make a boatload of money. I'm not real fond of that scenario personally but it is what it is and so be it. "Bankrupting" the team does no good for anyone. It doesn't work for the "trickle down" or "trickle up" theory. Everyone involved loses. Except maybe Sterling.
Apparently, the outrage expressed over racism is commensurate with how much money the racist gives to your organization: ScreenshotNAACP Admits Ignoring Sterling’s Racism Because of ‘Large Donations’ Breitbart Sports: Roslyn M. Brock, the chairman of the Board of Directors of the NAACP, admitted the organization "overlooked" Clippers owner Donald Sterling's racism because he made "large donations" to the Los Angeles branch and would be developing guidelines going forward for how awards are given in the future. The Los Angeles branch of the NAACP gave Sterling a humanitarian award and was slated to give him a lifetime achievement award in two weeks before the organization revoked the award after an audio recording surfaced in which Sterling tells a woman that was supposedly his girlfriend to not bring "black people" to his games. The NAACP revoked Sterling's award before the NBA banned him from the league for life. Writing in USA Today, Brock wrote: Our NAACP chapter in L.A. is not blameless. Because of Sterling's large donations to local charities, including the NAACP, they overlooked his worse than checkered history on race issues and gave him a lifetime achievement award in 2009 — and were about to honor him with a humanitarian award before his racist recording surfaced. http://nation.foxnews.com/2014/05/0...g-sterling’s-racism-because-‘large-donations’
