Speaking of the tariffs, does anyone actually understand why we're starting a massive trade war with Canada? I don't agree with doing it to China or Mexico, but at least on paper I generally understand his rationale. What did Canada do to get such harsh treatment from an ally?

@John Kamps what'd you guys do?

Ah, I see. Canada's mistake was not allowing themselves to be absorbed as a state the moment he took office.

Maybe you should educate yourself. The largest timber company (from Canada) has purchased all the mills in one of the largest lumber production areas. They get 80% of their timber from public land and drove the prices to pre 80’s levels. They ship the high quality lumber north, and bring their spf crap here on the back haul. Win, Win. For them.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.... the threat of tariffs is already paying dividends. Behold:

Mexico agrees to deploy 10,000 troops to US border in exchange for tariff pause

Trump admin officials are working with Mexico on a wider deal

    February 3, 2025

Mexico has agreed to deploy 10,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in exchange for a one-month delay on President Donald Trump's threatened tariffs, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday.

Sheinbaum made the announcement on social media Monday morning, roughly 12 hours before the tariffs were set to take effect. Trump and Sheinbaum spoke on Monday and agreed that Mexico will do more to combat drug trafficking into the U.S., and that the U.S. will step up efforts to block the flow of firearms into Mexico.

Sheinbaum also said officials with the U.S. and Mexico were beginning talks on wider trade and security issues.

Trump confirmed the deal in his own post on Truth Social, describing the call with Sheinbaum as a "very friendly conversation."

"I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States. These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country," Trump wrote.

"We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico. I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a 'deal' between our two Countries," he added.

The deal comes just days after Trump announced 25% tariffs on both Mexico and Canada, as well as 10% tariffs on China. Trump says he spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday, but the pair did not reach an agreement. He says they will speak again later Monday.

The tariffs are set to take effect at midnight on Tuesday.

Ah, Canada's paused too. The only change of sunstance annouced from the negotiations is that w̶e̶ Canada will spend an extra $200 million on the border...

There's a weird obsession with the number 10000. I think it's stupid and an accident, but this could be some way of posturing to China.

In China, traditionally the number 10000 is used as a synonym for infinity or at least "an uncountably large number." This is still known and used (mainly in the context of storytelling, well wishes, etc.). In theory, Chinese news will now print that Mexico and Canada each pledged "near infinite" personnel.

I wouldn’t believe this for one second. When Cartel members are taking pot shots across the border at our officers. Sheinbaum is a puppet of the cartels. Anyone in Mexico that values their life is a puppet to the cartels these days. I don’t buy into this for one second.

Ever wonder where cartels get all yhe firepower from? Mexico has a much more vested interest in securing the border than we do...

In any case, if you believe that, why celebrate the new order for 10000 troops?

That’s not the point. Four years ago I supported Joe Biden. Internally I felt he was weak and feckless. In the end I was proven right…. But I supported the man up to Afghanistan because it was the right thing to do. I am an American I want my leadership to be victorious….. Donald Trump could eat beans and fart daisies and the left would crucify him over it…. Why? Can you not see the advantage we all gain when our leaders are empowered and successful? For crying out loud man…. We have a strong leader that has done more to impact our nations future in a positive way than anyone this century. Cripes man, at least acknowledge that he is being proactive rather than lying on the beach eight out of twelve months…… I swear to my soul I believe a liberal would gripe over a hundred dollar bill if Trump were the person handing it to him,

Well, this is a well known leftist. Thankfully she hasn’t got a Pulitzer like Haberman from the NYT’s did.
Mexico deployed 15,000 newly formed national guard to their northern border under Trump’s first term. Illegal immigration dropped then exploded under the Biden administration under the supervision of the Harris/Mayorkas tenure. So what happened?

I think you're deluding yourself. He's eroded our power (especially any chance at soft power), terrorized our citizens, and on top of it all, spent more than 1 quarter of his first presidency at golf clubs (usually his own, which he profits from).

He doesn’t pay to play at his own golf courses. How many days was the imbecile in chief, that the left adamantly defended as a component leader, actually work? ? ? Who in the hell was actually running the country? What foreign countries actually respected him? How about the citizens terrorized by illegal immigrants that he let in? I can continue if you want.

Putting the kabosh on all this wonton federal spending is a gift to my kids and grandkids. Biden took out billions in 18 month loans. The idiot…. It takes a trillion a year of my hard earned money to just service the damn debt! Federal spending is no longer sustainable. My kids deserve a future.

How's a deal to somewhat buffer the number of troops Mexico has at the border going to help? Certainly not worth antagonizing some of our closest allies over.
