Mayor Bans Bottled Water for City Offices to fight Global Warming AP - Posted: 2007-06-23 SAN FRANCISCO (June 23) - Is city water better than bottled water? Mayor Gavin Newsom thinks so. Newsom has issued an executive order banning city departments from buying bottled water, even for water coolers. The ban goes into effect July 1, and will extend to water coolers by Dec. 1. The move was billed as a way to help stem global warming and save taxpayer money. "We're hoping to set the example for the private sector and other cities in getting off the bottle," said Tony Winnicker, spokesman for the San Francisco public utilities commission. In a press release announcing the decision, the mayor cited the environmental impact on fossil fuels used in making, transporting and disposing of the bottles. When the ban goes into effect, city and county offices will dispense municipal tap water from a reservoir. I believe most places would have used a drinking fountain! Just how crazy is California? You decide!
Dan. I was born and raised in the bay area and the tap water there is excellent good idea, however here is Mesa AZ the city water is only good enough for watering your plants.
Bruce, regardless of how the water is in SF, how is the plumbing in the city-owned buildings? Can you assure everyone that there is no lead or other contaminants that are typical of older office buildings everywhere?
Good point 99, but there are so many activist in the city of SF that by the time this all goes into effect they will find some way to to find out for sure if it is safe I hope again good point though.
Bruce, I don't believe it's a matter of which is the BEST water, but the idea that it will save the planet from global warming. By not using the fossil fuels for making, transporting and disposing of the bottles. Just how redundant could that be?
I likes california state for many things, it so rich, so full of weird peoples, nice weather, weirder people, a Governator that actor of gun violence movies - but married to Kennedy girl. And in states capital, you can even hear lot of Russian spoken, so it feel like home.
You are a little confused aren't you? Unless they happen to speak Mexican in Russia, which is entirely possible by now.
This must be due to the Russian for Mexican exchange program, just kidding but I would trade a lot of Americans who expect a free lunch for the Russians. I like their work ethic.
Hmm... I am opposed to illegal immigration and the impact that it has on our labor force and economy, but I spent a few years building in San Diego and here in the Gettysburg area (the apple capital of the East) Mexicans do most of the orchard work. From my observation and from the views of many orchard owners, I would find it difficult to knock the work ethics of many of the Mexican workers.
If I were in your country I would be more concerned not of Mexicans and Russians, but of lazy fat not work Americans populating caravan parks and collect of dole check from government. We come to your country be like immigrants of past, work hard, make good life for family and give children American sounding name. America a land of immigrants and take only best of all world. I find amazing that people so worked up about Mexicans take jobs, but then not worried about lazy caravan living people on edge of town watch tv and make more babies for taxpayers to care of. Get a clue America, find out what real problem is - it start at home, not next door.
I think there lot of people there that suitable for life of Sibir, break rocks and finaly work with prod of AK-47 in back. America good country - too bad so many Americans not so think.
Really! They want us to believe it may be the 'sun'? How much nonsense do they think they can get by with? There is absolutely no way of making any money forming a group to stop using sun-shine, so who do they think they are kidding. I vote we stay with man and Co2 as the real cause of all our problems.:smile :smile :smile :smile :smile :smile
