Well, I can give you one start. How many schools do you think you could build with $578,000,000? That is nearly $2 for every man, woman, and child in this country. LA Unified managed just one. And just to make sure, their two previous schools cost $608,000,000 - total, at least it is not each. See http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/08/2...unveils-nations-expensive-school-m-price-tag/. In case you were wondering, they are BROKE. I believe it is 3,200 teachers they are laying off because the cannot pay them. That is government logic. See just how long private businesses could last with that logic.

Well, roads are a good example because we wouldn't have many if they weren't government funded and maintained. It is a case where we have to do it to have a decent civilization and economy. And I think education is another good example because with a 100% private education I think a lot of kids would not get educated well or at all. And without an educated workforce, we are in big doo doo. Which makes it another example of everyone being forced to pitch in for the long term benefit of all.

Is there excess in both? Yes and I think that goes back to what I stated about how we view our government. But that does not mean that we would be better off with nothing provided by the government. People are way too short sighted and selfish to maintain the kid of infrastructure and education, etc that we need to avoid being a third world country.

I dont think it was Federal money. But that article didnt say. And it is three schools in one. Here in NV( Clark county anyway) it would cost about 70 mil for each grammer, middle, and high school built. So just about half the cost. Or close. Dont blame the department of education for a city that can better manange its money. Yeah, I think its a waste. But I dont think the department of education is a waste.

I was not trying to say it was federal money, just wasteful government. Despite that, I am sure some federal monies enter into that equation at some point. FWIW, your $800 per month for preschool is about what the interest per student is for that school. No operating cost, no salaries, no equipment, no nothing else. Where I have heard numbers, the government paying for the private schools (vouchers?) is cheaper than sending the student to public schools.

Having said all that, I am still not sure whether I am for or against vouchers (or equivalents). Maybe the best answer is some yes and some no.
