Democrats are set to subpoena
The new majority is expected to hold hearings on military spending and the Iraq war -- just for starters.

WASHINGTON — Rep. Ike Skelton knows what he will do in one of his first acts as chairman of the Armed Services Committee in the Democratic-led House: resurrect the subcommittee on oversight and investigations.

The panel was disbanded by the Republicans after they won control of Congress in 1994. Now, Skelton (D-Mo.) intends to use it as a forum to probe Pentagon spending and the Bush administration's conduct of the Iraq war.

It has been 12 years since Democrats were in control of both the House and Senate. But they are looking to make up for lost time, and in some cases, make the Bush administration and its business allies sweat.

With control of every committee in Congress starting in January, the new majority will inherit broad powers to subpoena and investigate. And that is expected to translate into wide-ranging and contentious hearings.

The agenda is likely to be dominated by the Iraq war, but could include probes into the Bush administration's warrantless surveillance, environmental policies and new prescription-drug program for seniors. Industries, such as oil companies, could also come under closer scrutiny.

It's really unnecessary for the Democrats to try and make Bush look bad now that they have gained power. He has been doing a great job of that all on his own. Even the Republicans are peeved at him for some of his less insightful decisions. He has a little more stomping around to do but I think he'll pretty much just fade into the sunset maybe riding Karl Rove.

His time is over.

I hope you are right and maybe something will be accomplished during the next two years, but I doubt it very much. Pelosi has already told the news media that she will insist on the investigation into the Bush administration, and if found wanting, will file 'impeachment' papers on him. I'm not sure she has the guts to go through with this action.
Do you think the Pelosi Dems will do anything about the likes of William J Jefferson (La) who has been associated with inflence-peddling and bribery. Seems that he should be made to resign like the Rep members were forced out. It would sure undercut her support from the black section of the party if this were to happen.

 

I'm assuming you're using that phrase like the South Africans used it after the fall of apartheid. You do know that South Africa DIDN'T charge people (white racists OR black terrorists) with crimes precisely so they wouldn't spend years "getting even." They wanted to move on. I kind of doubt the Congressional leadership is capable of that (the Republicans have spent the last 6 years blaming everything bad on Clinton, and Clinton spent 8 years blaming everything bad on 12 years of Reagan/Bush).

 

All I want is to get the correct story in the history books. BTW The truth and reconciliation movement is not confined to SA.

 

Why would you be so interested in changing the way history is taught now days? Do you have something against making everyone happy with the current placement in time and space that they find themselves in, or do you want a bunch of discontents.
