NEW YORK (AP) -- The Department of Justice should postpone upcoming elections in New Orleans until displaced voters have been located, NAACP President Bruce S. Gordon said Saturday. Last week, Gordon asked U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to make sure election procedures are fair. The Voting Rights Act allows federal officials to scrutinize election changes that may hurt minorities. In other words, they are afraid that there aren't enough black voters in New Orleans to ensure that Democrats remain firmly in power. They aren't interested in voting rights, but in voting outcomes. Everyone is going to have to get used to the fact that New Orleans will never be exactly the same - disasters of this magnitude are quite shattering, and things will not fit back into their old framework. What will happen when New Orleans votes? God only knows - but lets have a vote and see what happens. Any displaced residents of New Orleans who are eligible to vote and have a mind to do so are already able to avail themselves of the methods provided for just such a contingency - any delay in the voting is the act of people afraid of how the votes might come out.
NAACP President Bruce S. Gordon: I think that that dude was the CEO of Verizon. Am I right? If this is they guy that I am thinking of I do not think he is a Democrat (I could be wrong). And if he is a Dem is is pretty far right in the party.
The NAACP is a big part of the democratic party machine. To deny it is silly at best. As far as the issue of voting in New Orleans is concerned, I guess that should be a local matter based upon the residences laws and registration procedures of that city and state. What we have in New Orleans is more of a money grab then anything else.
The fact that the former CEO of Verizon (a Dow 30 company) is their leader could be signaling a change there.
Just to show you how silly this whole thing gets, there are those who whould have you believe that Bruce S. Gordon is actually a closet Republican. Yes, and chickens have lips!:kewl:
Could someone be so so out of it that they think that only republicans can be CEO's in the United States.
Pro business types often gravitate toward the right (the invisible hand pushes them in that direction). BTW not just a CEO a CEO of a Dow 30 company (there are only 30 of these in the world and yes most are Republican) and if I am correct Verizon has benefitted from his leadership. If this is the guy I think he is, the NAACP will be transformed. He is a legit serious person who can do stuff, not some pandering baffoon.
