I remember back in 1990 or so I was living in LA and some guy hit my car. I went to the insurance company to get my repair estimate and couldn't believe the opulence of their building. They had an atrium with a waterfall and a rock and plant pool and glass covered walls and enormous offices and the guy was bragging that he made $80,000 a year. All I could think was that we are paying sky high insurance rates for this? What a waste when people need basic health coverage.

My next door neighbor is chair of a dept at a local university. He brags about making $200k and getting vacations paid for by teaching classes in exotic locales. All I could think was that we are paying sky high tuition rates for this? What a waste when people are forced to take on such exorbinant student loan debt.

Last time I checked, and I just checked again, Universities don't sell insurance. You pay high tuition these days because RW'ers in just about any state you can name have cut the state subsidies for the state owned public schools. The State decides the tuition rates not the Universities. As states reduce their allocation to public schools, the cost goes up for each individual attending because the state is reducing it's subsidy. You complain that some highly educated PhD is making $200 grand a year while the CEO of United Healthcare Insurance Stephen Hemsley made $102 million in total compensation for 2009. For some reason that $200 grand doesn't seem all that big anymore. To be honest, we are a nonprofit so we'd charge no tuition if we could keep the doors open and do so. We are already some of the lowest paid state workers in the state system.

Again, I find it funny that a RW'er that hates to pay taxes to the government but likes to complain that the state funded schools are charging too much tuition. You really can't have it both ways.

So you're okay with 100,000 people being added to the unemployment rolls?

I have thought about what a mass layoff of insurance people would be like for a few decades now. Dreamed of it. Now that it has happened, I find myself under-whelmed with thoughts of their inabilty to rip people off now. However, the thought of having the keys to that bus has got me all giddy.

In other words: They deserve worse than the loss of their jobs. IMO, they deserve prison-time. But what they did was legal, so I'd also like to imprison those that enabled these people to rip me off. That said, not all of them were overly-greedy, some quoted premiums that only allowed a modest income for themselves (the majority of the premium goes to their bosses in the Insurance Industry). Those that charged more however, those that made far too much money off the system, those people I'd like to have under me wheels.

The people in the Insurance Industry are not the only ones to fleece the general public though. Quite a few industries charge more than they should, but the very idea of mandatory car insurance (in Michigan) especially irks me. We pay thousands of dollars a year with no actual benefit. The law requires we purchase it, and you need a car in our area... it's a necessity.

So yeah, I'm ok with their loss of a means to legally charge me for something that I don't want, and don't need, but am forced to have.

Well, let me introduce you to your new insurance agent: Barack Hussein Obama..he'll be picking your coverage & determining your premiums from now on.

Maybe I'll have to pay a bit for it, that isn't certain given my income, but at least I'll get some benefit from it... unlike car insurance. Maybe I can become healthier, though it would have been better if I had the opportunity when I was younger... I may be past the point of being able to rectify most of the damage caused by inadequate nutrition and medical care. At least I may have a shot at becoming healthier... and maybe that will help me overcome the chronic poverty I've endured throughout my life.

My father worked for Aetna Insurance for 25 years in their risk management division. You know nothing about the people who work for insurance companies or their families and yet your choice would have been to have me grow up without a father while he rotted in prison for doing nothing more than being part of a legal profession that actually helps a goodly number of people each year? Some day you will learn to dial back the rhetoric or think before writing/speaking, but today you've labeled yourself a misguided and unreasoning political zealot in my eyes.

If you not with someone then you a no one. Remember the fable of the bat that did not join the war between the birds and the animals.

I really do not expect him to tone back anything. From what I have seen the more sense his opponents make, the wilder he gets.

Boy, I can't believe what I'm reading. Such violent rhetoric. Dare i say "vitriolic"?

The legislature in Michigan must have passed the car insurance law without reading what was in it.

Come on! "My father worked for an insurance company and you want to see him in jail chained to a wall while his kids are sold off to the highest bidder on Christmas and the family dog is traded in for a handful of beans so that Obama can perform medical experiments on him." Now there is a proper lesson in hyperbole and about as close to what IQ was referring to as what you said. Let's make a promise to stay on this planet HM.

Don't worry about iqless...just another case of moen telling a story (that probably isn't true) and iqless getting all lathered up.

Wrong. I personalized precisely what IQ was saying. Instead of making it a story about a nameless, faceless "insurance person" without a family, who he would gleefully throw in prison on a whim, I made it about my father, who was a decent and caring man when he was alive. I never said anything about the family dog, Obama, or medical experiments; that was your creation. All I said was that IQ would have him rot in prison and deprive me (a child) of a father who was guilty of nothing more than being gainfully employed, which was precisely what he said. In any case, I think someone has blasted off into orbit, but it's not me.

Not exactly percisely because you cut out the entire middle of his post. I'm sure your father was a great person, it just comes through your words when you talk about him. QI also said that what they were selling was completely legal but you ignored that. I was delving into exaggerated hyperbole only to prove a point. QI never wished your father into prison and even I can tell what he was saying was just tongue-in-cheek anyway. QI was indicting the insurance industry and taking out his distain for the only people he actually had contact with i.e. the insurance agents and then only in only in a humorous intended way that should not be taken at face value. You know this.
