LOL ok lets see if i have this right, If for the sake of argument someone is a out and out scoundrel in his everyday life but on a singl or even multiple ocassion he has put his life at risk and with total disregard for his own safety saves someone, then he is not a hero at that moment? and one can not look back on his life and say catagoricly that man was a hero?

My point is that Bill is convicted and therefore proven to be corrupt (the type of character to fake a military record), and Jefferson is not convicted (remember that little innocent until proven guilty thing) and all he really did was recieve compensation for getting phone systems into Nigeria.

 

Whether those are bribes or not remains to be seen. The jury may see it as fair compensation for getting phones into Nigeria.

BTW give me the bill name and number that he introduced or voted on in exchange for that money.

 

Republicans of your country no less corrupt. They usually just more clever of keeping ahead of getting found out or have money which to pay off the informants. Democrats of your country they get caught again, like Mr. Clinton and his "friends" of female.

Let me counter by asking you this. Do you believe this was a gift for nothing? I would have thought you would know that there are many other ways a Congressman can use the power and influence of the office to get things done. When this service is performed in the normal course on behalf of constutuents, it is usually [but not always] considered acceptable. When it is done for others for a fee, it is a crime.

 

Federal authorities accused Rep. William J. Jefferson yesterday of using his congressional office and staff to enrich himself and his family, charging the Louisiana Democrat with offering and accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes to support business ventures in the United States and several West African nations.

The 16-count indictment also accused Jefferson, a former co-chairman of congressional caucuses on Nigeria and African trade, of racketeering, money laundering and obstruction of justice. The indictment was handed up by a federal grand jury and capped a long and tumultuous FBI investigation.

The grand jury said Jefferson, 60, had solicited a bribe for himself and family members in a congressional dining room, falsely reported trips to Africa as official business, sought to corrupt a senior Nigerian politician and promoted U.S. financing for a sugar factory in Nigeria whose owner paid fees to a Jefferson family company in his home state.

The indictment said that at one point, Jefferson drove in his Lincoln Town Car through the streets of Arlington with $100,000 in marked FBI bills meant for a top Nigerian official whose assistance Jefferson needed for a business venture. The lawmaker allegedly stowed $90,000 in his home freezer, wrapped in aluminum foil and concealed inside frozen-food containers.

The funds would be a down payment, Jefferson is accused of explaining to an associate, to ensure that "the little hook is in there."

That is a pretty grey area. Congressmen are allowed certain activities and not others and it is not a clear cut thing. You may have heard that the justice dept have been laying off Pubs and hammering Dems and that is where this case came from. Jefferson may have gone right up to the line but he probably did not cross it. We will know by the end of the year when a jury decides. this case is not as cut and dry as the right wing media presents it.

 

If Jefferson considered that 90K to be payment for legit services rendered the case could crumble. As for the family members he did hire some relatives as consultants.

Ever heard of Nepotism? It's against the law. Ever heard or Receipts? They are required as proof of payment.

 

It is a reasonable and customary business practice to accept payment for legitimate services in the form of check or bank wire transfers to a business-related bank account. It isn't done through FBI marked currency bundled up in the freezer. Obviously, Jefferson believed he had something to hide and that he was doing something wrong, and using congressional facilities to do it.

The truth is, Danr, that nothing a democrat could do would ever be critized by you. Jefferson isn't the sort of person that a thinking individual would want governing the nation regardless of party affiliation. The whole thing reflects as badly on you as it does on him.
