I think the data supports that the middle class is shrinking somewhat, but you make it sound as if the middle class will disappear over the next decade. If you are so concerned about the shrinking middle class, what do you suggest we do about it? Let me guess, raise taxes on the rich.
I have never denoted a time frame or referenced a 10 year cycle to this process. All I have said is that the shrinking of the middle class continues unabated and has for quite a while. This current recession HAS exacerbated the decline without question. My whole point is that without a viable middle class, this country will look much, much different and akin to any one of the third world countries that exist today. My solution: Since wealth has concentrated at the top due in large part to the tax burden being shifted from high income people to wage earners, it makes sense to shift the tax burden back to the wealthiest Americans. Stop all corporate welfare and actively support and finance small businesses.
A family of 4 or 5 doesn't need a larger house than a single person? And if you think the only things that increase in cost by having a family is food and utilities, you are definitely single. lol Off the top of my head, I can think of clothing costs, school supplies and cost, insurance and medical costs. Treat that kind of stuff as optional money spent and you would probably get a visit from DCFS. Rationalize it however you want but a single person that makes 70K is in an entirely different economic situation that a couple or a family that makes 70K. The single persona has a lot more disposable income and is in a different economic class.
That is because they live beyond their means and spend all of their disposable income (and more). That doesn't mean they are somehow in a lower income class. They still have the income of upper class people. That is like saying that someone who makes 250K a year and lives in a 500K house, has 3 new cars, a maid and eats out every night is in the same economic class as someone who makes 70K a year and have a 100K house, drives 2 beaters, cleans their own house, and cooks their own meals because they have the each same amount of money left over at the end of the month.
Just reading this forum, it is hard to say the middle class is shrinking...everyone is in it even if they make more money that 90% of their fellow 'middle classers'. Definitely stop corporate welfare. As far as tax burden, eventually taxes will have to go up just to pay for all the things we currently want our government to do let alone if we want to give out more money.
QUOTE=Moen1305;289724]If you don't believe that the middle class in this country is disappearing and are unwilling to believe 22 separate statistics that proves exactly that, you should move along before reading any further. This would just be a waste of your time. This is you not saying the middle class will disappear. I dont know how you run your life. Its not my business. But I dont live by statistics. Life is more than that. I dont rely on others to show me whats what. When I was a kid in NYC I saw plenty of kids who were poor. Holes in their sneakers, crappy haircuts. Parents who had neither a phone nor a car. But that wasnt poor. It was just not as well off as us. Poor is no home, no clothes, no food. I think there are less poor now than there was 15-20 years ago. Thats just a guess, because I dont have statistics on me. I have a feeling you think poor is having an analog cell phone, not a digital one.
Really? Have you ever looked into the percentage of the total tax paid by the top 2 percent off all tax collected by the IRS? Here, I'll help you...... http://www.gastongazette.com/articles/-51217--.html

Do you understand the use of the future tense? I am saying that the middle class is in the process of disappearing and will eventually disappear. When making statement about a broad group such as the middle class, your personal experiences are irrelevant. Statistics show trends you can't see by looking at holes in other kids shoes. If you don't believe in statistical science you can probably also rationalize away gravity. It can't be proven so you might as well go jump off the tallest building you can find. Maybe there is less gravity than there was years ago. You never know until you try.
But you call my personal experience irrelevant. My thinking that this post is hypocritical is probably off the mark as well. What a joke. And isnt gravity a theory, not a statistic?
Actually I believe you are the one who is wrong. You can point out statistics and charts, but you probably dont know much about humanity that wasnt written and analyzed by someone else. Like you said in response to another member; you didnt put a time limit on you statement. So 35 or 55 years from now when the middle class is still around, you can proudly say,''I never said when it will disappear. But it is disappearing. Mark my words. ''. Oh and I was only like eight or nine or so years old when seeing the poor kid's shoes. Unlike you the prepubescent statistician.
What exactly is the US definiton of Middle Class? the UK version is someone who sends there kids to private school, works in the proferssions (academics, lawyers, engineers, politicians, doctors, company directors) at a Middle to senior level resides in a larger than normal property/ possibly has a second home in the city. We also have a lower middle class and a Upper middle class LOL
There really isn't one. It is an extremely vague term. Hence, why everyone calls themselves Middle Class. There is apparently a stigma to being either Lower Class Income or Upper Class Income. Everyone wants to think of themselves as an Average Joe in their lifestyle, I guess. So everyone calls themselves a C student. In addition, there is a financial incentive to making the Middle Class Income definition expand into as high an income bracket that people will buy into. Right now, the hot topic here is about the 'Middle Class Tax Cuts' for those making $250K a year or less. 250K? The median income in the US is about $45K. Someone making 5x that and having an extra 200K of income is in the same economic class as the people making around 50K? Seems odd to me. Especially when that only leaves 1.5% of the entire population making more than that and falling into the 'Upper Class' category. If you scored better than 98.5% of people on a test, would you consider yourself a Middle Achieving Student? But, the politicians need those votes and money from that 'Middle Class' demographic so it is in their best interests to make it as large a chunk of the population as possible. They can alienate as few people as possible by including 98.5% of the country. Not to mention that expanding it that high places many of them into the 'Middle Class' too.
See....the mega wealthy have recalculated their own now measure of wealth. It goes like this...under 250K, they're lazy, weak, worthless whiners. Over 250K begins lower middle class...above 1 million, middle, middle class, 10 million, upper middle class. That's why you always hear rich people saying they're not rich....they're "middle class"...I get it!
A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject. ~Winston Churchill • Dr. Sam Vaknin is psychologist, world renoun, who specializes in narcissism and pathological narcissist. He said Obama exhibits patholigical narcissism just like Hitler and Stalin. He is dangerous, delusional and psychotic. Scary stuff.
Some one forgot about productivity per hour here.If we were willing to keep hard industry here we could be competitive. The thought range from ROI to rebuilding a complete industry that never made a great net to gross on the P&L sheet. We the government make it more difficult for heavy industry to compete with laws that are unfair . One use to wonder how the meat industry stayed in business on .4-.5% net to gross? Profits are used to purchase land for their business & buying shares of companies who have good dividends. Their strong cash flow gives them this advantage. Terms are net 5 working days for fresh meat. Fishing fleets make no money on the fish itself. Unless it is exotic, or the Japanese consume it. The fish oil saved in the tanks on large cannery boats is the profit. Class is a myth. What you have net in hand to save, and invest is what counts. Children should expect a good education if you can provide it. If not, they must use all opportunities to obtain funds for school to be self sufficient. That should be their legacy. In 18 months Mr. Obama and a compliant Congress has spent 1 Trillion dollars. More than all Presidents and Congress since the inception of America . Above I see it says "a fanatic is one who can not change his mind and will not change the subject". Winston Churchill That is an ideologue. Mr. Obama was born of Communist parents, had a communist mentor, spent his time in school seeking out such people as friends. We know who they are,we see them everyday. Socialists ,Communists, radicals. He sat in a Black Theology Church for 20 years yet never heard the progressive rage Rev, Wright. This same Mr Obama convinced a Congress to produce some of the most outlandish and illegal bills ever produced. Stimulus, produced a few jobs a a great cost per job and the people are still not working, but we still pay. Health Care was never about health or care. It is 2700 pages of ear marks and mandates to the people. Dictatorial pages one upon another. They violate our rights under The Constitution. These bill were not written by Congress or read by Congress. Cap and trade is a massive Pyramid scheme. Designed to make the mega rich, who fly jets that burn more fuel in 4 hours than you burn in four years. Stimulus has agreed to pay the GM Fremont CA NUMMI plant all their pensions.By law a collapsed corporation shall pay the Bond holders before any one. This was and is being paid with borrowed money . We are now borrowing 2+ billion a day. Chrysler will probably get the same deal. All for votes, paying for union votes from borrowed money. All of Mr. Obamas book "Dreams of my father can verify much and America can show you the rest. I am now looking at that quote by Winston Churchill and see one could substitute the Fanatic for Ideologue, Barrack Obama.
Hey Pep! You know what happens when Republican talking points meets Snopes.com? This...http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/vaknin.asp
Sam Vakin has written many books on Narcissism . An expert on the subject. Did you become a Socialist after reading "Dreams Of My Father" or did you just vote for a party ? Do you believe in redistribution of your money? World Governance? Communism? Communists end your life when you can no longer produce more in currency than you consume. Socialist abort life for population control. They do it while you are a live birth. pep
I don't know about this doctor or whatever but can anyone say with a straight face that BO isn't a narcissist? He's textbook.
