What would you have done?

I went to one of the branches of my bank to get $1000 cash to buy two boxes of Kennedy's today and the teller accidentally gave me an extra $100.
When I couldn't find the large quantity of Kennedys I wanted at one of the other area banks, I bought a couple of rolls and only then realized that I still had more than the original $1000. I went back to my bank (different branch) and the teller called the other branch and had the teller count her drawer.
She called back and said that she was short the $100. I returned the money and deposited the rest into my account.

The teller thanked me for being so honest and I said that the tellers have been extremely patient with all of my coin requests and that I wasn't going to be the cause of some teller losing a $100. She said that it wasn't a matter of the teller paying the money back, it was a matter of her losing her job. I was sort of shocked by this realization because I figured that mistakes must happen form time to time.

Has anything like this ever happened to you while getting coins from your bank?

Good on ya ;) Never had it happen while buying coins - but yeah it's happened to me. I gave it back too. It's the right thing to do.

Based on my limited experience with being responsible for cash drawers, a less than $5 discrepancy from time to time (long time mind you) was tolerated, but go over $10 and you might be looking for a new job. Go over $50 and you might be looking at the flashing blue lights coming to take you downtown. Harsh lines for sure, but with good reason.

You definitely made that tellers day ;)

And wouldn't you just know it, I went in to another bank today to get a box of Kennedys and when I got home, I found that one of the rolls only had $8.00 in it.
I guess it is true what they say; No good deed goes unpunished. LOL :)

No matter how big the temptation may be, you MUST always do the right thing!! :)

This happened to me before. The teller gave me a hundred dollars extra back when I cashed my check. She was happy when I came back and returned it.

I had a similar experience a few years ago. I made a withdrawl from my checking account one morning- several hundred dollars at the drive-thru. I went to work and home later that afternoon. About 5:30pm I got a call from the bank manager. She said that the teller who helped me had accidentally shorted me $100. She planned to credit $100 to my account to make up for her mistake. I knew they hadn't shorted me $100 because I always count my cash. Years before another bank had shorted my college room mate $20 when he cashed a check and I never forgot it.

I told them to keep looking for the rightful owner but she insisted it had been me. The next day I went back to the bank, cash in hand, and they still didn't believe me. They had credited my account $100 and said the matter was resolved. I kind of laughed and told them to call me when they realized I wasn't the one owed the money. Two days later I got a calll from them. They found the person who'd been shorted and had straightened the whole thing out.
